In 1885 the English explorer and eroticist Sir Richard Burton published his famous translation of the 1001 Arabian Nights - a masterpiece of erotic literature. The Victorians were obsessed with fantasies of harems and dancing girls. Early photographers such as Nadar, Lehnert & Landrock exploited this - producing many portraits of Arab, Bedouin and Moorish women. Many have survived as postcards.
