Loss of habitat in the 1900's resulted in plummeting populations, and this woodpecker was declared an endangered species in the 1970's. Today, populations are slowly recovering but are largely restricted to state and federally owned lands where pine trees can reach the maturity required for nesting. One area where this woodpecker can still be found is the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge in south-central Mississippi. This book is primarily a collection of photographs of this bird taken at the Noxubee NWR with a description of its habitat and life history Keywords:Listed in: |
