Once you have had your manuscript typeset and prepared for print, it is advisable to have it proofread. You will have read your text many times and may believe that you have spotted every possible error. But over-familiarity with the work can allow mistakes to slip through the net, and having a fresh pair of eyes review the text will allow you to publish it with complete confidence.

Page proofs (ie the typeset pages) represent the first, and usually the only, chance for authors see the words integrated with the other elements – eg page layout design, illustrations, graphs – to become a coherent whole before publication. The proofreader's role is to check that the editor, designer and typesetter have done their jobs correctly, and to use judgment in marking amendments, in order to minimise costs and delays.

Our proofreader will:

• check basic spelling, grammar and punctuation for accuracy and consistency, and correct as necessary;
• check for correct numbering of headings, figures, tables and other numbered elements such as lists and footnotes;
• highlight inconsistencies in typographical elements such as headings, quotes, lists and footnotes;
• highlight cross-references for updating, and references to figures, tables and display material;
• highlight for your review text requiring further attention to improve sense and legibility.

Please note that a proofreader will not:

• rewrite or rearrange otherwise correct copy to improve sense and legibility;
• revise the heading structure;
• research the accuracy of statements of fact.

Those who may wish to use the Proofreading service will include first-time authors with little or no writing experience, experienced authors requiring the reassurance of a ‘second pair of eyes’, or those with extensive writing experience but in other formats.
