Just as the above masterpieces created an artistic rejuvenation in their respective fields, "Le Agonie D' Rhino" shows us all what comic books could and should be. Marc Graci paints his satirical creative vision in bold strokes, inventing a well rounded and interesting cast of characters:
Rhinoboy, the forgotten son. Robyn Williams, the deadbeat dad. Catrina Guard, the conflicted love interest. Chicken Bear, the.. bear..uh, who shoots chickens out of his back. Well, they can't all be winners.
A series of increasingly bizarre, outlandish events drives the story's plot at a breakneck pace and keeps the book exciting, leading to the final confrontation in issue 8.
The back-up stories are amusing, albeit too short, tales of Rhinoboy and the infamous Lobster Man. Short and sweet, they act as the creamy sorbet that rounds out the meal and cleanses the palate. As for the pin-ups, they serve as a nice break in between features. I'm normally not a fan of pin-ups, but some of the pieces (especially "The Death of Rhinoboy" by Nik Fink) are so heart-rendingly beautiful I can't help but feel touched. I actually had some of them enlarged at a local copy shop and "The Death of Rhinoboy" is now hanging above the desk in my den.
This book is such an incredible value. 150 pages for 10 bucks, and THE WHOLE STORY with no further commitment. Thanks for respecting your readers, Mr. Graci!
"Le Agonie D' Rhino" is like "Roots" for white people.
Overall, this book is a great read at a great value. If you aren't a fan of Marc Graci you will be after read this book.
The book includes all eight issues of the series, so it offers the complete story and is a good introduction to Marc Graci's work. I've often tried to get involved in reading Marvel comics, but I've always hated the huge cross-over storylines. I would need to buy like a dozen different issues just to know what was going on. That's no problem here; it's all self-contained. As something of an aspiring artist myself, it's really interesting to watch Marc's artistic ability and style evolve through the book's 150 plus pages.
Although the story's a bit dated, it still packs a wicked punch in the irreverent way that South Park or the Family Guy does. I'll never forget the scene where Robin Williams assaults Rhinoboy in the burlesque house.
There are also a few back-up stories (the one with SnowDad is great!) and pin-ups by different artists. It's interesting to see someone else's take on Rhinoboy and adds some variety to the book.
All in all, I think this is a phenomenal book and, at $10.00, blows away any other graphic novel collections on the market in sheer value. This is not quite as amazing as Marc's current works, but it's still a classic.
