The stories, including film parodies, star ourselves and our friends in adventures set in our home town. Sean Phillips went on to draw comics for all the major comic publishers, drawing characters such as Spider-man, X-Men, Batman, Constantine and Superman. Pete Doree has self-published many comics including 'Stan and Jack' and 'The Infernal Gods Of Electric Disaster. David Holman has turned out relatively normal and manages to hold down a proper job. It had been an interesting day, meeting in Blanchardtown. quick site visit.Pint or two in Temple Bar then home on the 6.30. And then (more through being bored than anything else)I googled myself and by some strange mystical joining of lay lines I stumbled across this thing.
Now don't get me wrong, I am all for a bit of nostalgia. I mean I bought into the whole, look back at the 80s didnt Simon Le Bon write great songs/ God I can't believe Tony Wilson is dead/We were all just goths listening to Leonard Cohen and The Sisters of mercy shit the same as the next man but come on lads. This is just wrong... Here's the story I look at the preview of this book all very nice bit o retro from the old days in Haverhole and with ou so much as a note of warning I am looking face to face with well what I can only describe as a grainy black and white picture of one of the children of the corn.... I kid you not. There looking at me through my 18" dell inspiron 1501 screen. And you what really takes the biscuit. what really is the kick in the preverbial crown jewels.... IT WAS ME....... AHHHHHH........
Anyhoo keep the faith all you crazy cats out there in cyber land oh and remember " keep wearing those ruby slippers" Peace....
If you're a Sean Phillips fan, you need this book, It's as simple as that.
I'm Pete Doree, and way back in the early '80's myself, David Holman and Sean Phillips ( who in those days we called
Philbo! ) wrote and drew over 200 pages of comic strips about ourselves, our friends, and our adventures in time and space as The Kids Of Rec. Road.
In one episode, we'd be starring in a Star Wars parody, in another Sean would become a superhero called The LongJohn Kid,in yet another, I'd become a millionaire, get beat up
by Marlon Brando, try and commit suicide and form a Kiss tribute band.
As we were all about thirteen / fourteen at the time, the strips I drew were, well, actually not that bad for a kid.
The strips Sean drew were, of course, ridiculously good,
and still stand up ( as does pretty much all of this book )
as warm, funny, and full of heart.
For Philbo Phans ( sorry ) this is absolutely where it all
started, so get yourself a copy already!
Me & David wrote the best gags tho'.....
