This book is an invaluable resource for any freelance photographer. I got it right when it came out, and I only wish it had come out earlier! I had to learn about many of the business practices that Leslie writes about through trial and error earlier in my career. I've read some other books on this topic, but this book really stands out as understanding the business from a contemporary standpoint, and as offering truly usable and useful advice. The title says "commercial photographer", but I think just about any freelance photographer could really learn a lot from this book.
I can't say enough about Leslie's new book, and it couldn't have come at a better time. I'm so thankful she wrote it. I would say this book is indespensable for an aspiring photographer wanting to enter the business of freelance photography. It has so much new up-to-date information that is truly invaluable, even to those already in the industry. Leslie speaks from experience. She has been on both sides of the fence, and is truly in touch and empathetic to the creative mind when it comes to business. She shows that it is possible to run a successful photography business and still do what you love to do... take pictures. Her down-to-earth style is easy to relate to and even humorous at times. It's actually an enjoyable book to read. I spent a considerable amount of time reading and re-reading the ASMP Business Practices Book attempting to find all the answers I was looking for. The ASMP book was very helpful, but Leslie's book answered a lot of questions that weren't in that book and gave me a much more complete view of how to actually run a successful freelance business. She explains everything from how to calculate your Cost of Doing Business to how to go about building your website to. For such a small book, I was amazed at how much useful information she managed to pack into it. You truly can't go wrong purchasing this book. I can tell there's years of experience between the covers.
