A great collection that really does recall a golden age of British Horror Anthologies, not least those collected by the late, great Herbert Van Thal. First in a series that promises much. Special mention for the stories of Daniel McGachey and James Stanger - two polar opposites from the world of horror. Daniel will send shivers down your spine with his Victorian supernatural tale, and James will have you throwing up your lunch with a contemporary in-yer-face bloodbath. They're all well worth a look. Buy it!

I'm lucky enough to have had one of my stories featured in this collection but would like to pay a small tribute here to high standard of writing and imagination elsewhere in The First BHF Book of Horror Stories.

Some were like brief little paper cuts and others more ambitious and broader of scope, but taken together they all did an excellent shop of capturing the spirit and variety of the old Pan collections which inspired this one.

The aged cover illustration is a beauty and the artwork that appears throughout of an equally high standard.

The BHF Book of Horror Stories - Great Product! [ No Rating ] 29 Sep 2006
I just received my copy of The BHF Book of Horror Stories from Lulu today. I must say, I was very impressed by the book's format. It was pleasantly reminiscent of The Pan Book of Horror Stories, which I loved so much as a teenager.

Not only is this book well presented, but it also gives all new horror writers a wonderful opportunity to see their work in print. Being a horror writer myself, I too have actually submitted some of my work to the editor with a view to publication.

If you love good, traditional horror the way it used to be - and should STILL be - then this book is an absolute MUST.

I can't wait for the next volume!

A superbly entertaining read in it's own right, and a loving tribute to the well thumbed old paperbacks that lurk in the shadowy corners of second hand book shops, this book features a wide range of delicious horrors.

Whether your taste leans towards cozy fireside tales told in Victorian gentlemen's clubs or to the festering barbarity of modern Urban nightmares, from the tongue-in-cheek to the teeth-in-throat, there's something for everyone here.

Cannibals, ghosts and doorways to Hell, and lavishly illustrated throughout!Buy it now, if you have the guts...

A good start to what I hope is a long series of these anthologies. There's a mix of different styles and lengths of story, something to suit most horror story fans, I should think. There are a number of stories here which really deserve to be well known, and even managed to bring a delighted shiver as I read them on a bus in the bright daylight of a summer morning!

The British Horror film seems to be in the ascendant again, which may in some small way be due to the enthusiasm of the guys 'n' gals over at www.britishhorrorfilms.co.uk, a website devoted to, well, what it says in the title really, and with a vibrant Forum of well over 1000 members.

Not content with reviving the fortunes of British horror cinema, the Forum members have now turned their midas touch to that bastion of 60s and 70s culture, the British horror paperback. As Editor (and site moderator) Chris Wood says, these books were a guilty pleasure of many a young person's childhood (quite possibly yours), so what better way to remind us of the glory days of the Pan and Fontana Books of Horror and Ghost stories, not to mention the power of a well told eerie tale, than by collecting together the BHF members' spooky short stories and publishing them in one collection?

The tales in the first volume (first, note - this could be the start of something big) evoke the golden age of the British horror story. Most are set in contemporary surroundings, with characters facing the unknown and the terrible. Here are stories with a twist in the tale, some short, some shorter, all effectively nasty but with a tongue never far from a cheek, and beautifully illustrated, again all the work of the British Horror Films site members.

If you loved a good horror story when you were growing up, and wondered why people don't write them any more, well they do. And the good news is, they're still scary.

Strongly recommended.
