For the most part, they’ve learned to live with the judgments of their non-serving peers and the war that still goes on in their heads, although one also has murder on his mind.******* Dick Stanley is a retired daily newspaper staff writer in Austin, Texas. He fought in Vietnam in 1969 as an Army lieutenant and light-infantry senior advisor to a South Vietnamese militia unit in the I Corps tactical zone. Keywords:Listed in: |

"Dick Stanley's 'Leaving the Alamo: Texas Stories After Vietnam'...is a first-rate collection of 16 short stories, all of which center on Vietnam veterans."

January/February 2007
An excellent book. Hardly seems like a first effort for the author. A couple of the characters sounded very familiar to this two-tour Vietnam vet.

"I simply couldn't breeze thru it -- one or two stories and I was full. The images stayed with me -- haunting, arresting -- and continued to percolate over time, some unforgettable, like the description of Johnny's grave in The Long Fall, probably my single favorite.
Your familiarity with the colorful 'Texian' culture and linguistic eccentricities contributed to the authenticity and richness of the prose... In all, an admirable blending of two cultures and a book which should find favor, particularly among those vested in the literature of that unique region."
Tucker Smallwood 1Lt. Army Advisor 1969

"I think you have captured in the stories the agony that a lot of vets have had to live with and have struggled to overcome."
