As a first time author, Michaels does certainly impress. Having read the book in a single day, I found it to be a refreshing, original story with some decent, almost lovable characters.
Having said that, it does have some flaws. For starters, certain parts of the book don't really need to be there (such as Shelly's dreams). Also, it seems like there are a few too many references to other movies or books- it seems to break my concentration when I see ANOTHER Lord of the Rings reference. Lastly, the plot feels rather thin, although the author tries his very hardest to thicken it up.
There are a few mistakes with grammer, but it was not so bad.
Overall, it is a fine book by a first-time author. I am looking forward to Mr Michaels next novel, and hope that learning from previous mistakes will make a novel even greater.
