110 Years of History in Images and Geography (1898-2008). Perhaps only remembered now as an item of historical trivia, the city of Dalian had a profound geo-political effect on the shape of our modern world. The former capital of Manchuria, it was a cornerstone of international territorial struggles in Asia for nearly a century. As the gateway to Russia, Korea, and China, the strategic port of Dalian was where many key battles were fought and other far-reaching decisions made. This digital map (.kml)* collection was compiled exclusively by SongLi from extensive research over several years, and remains an ongoing historical preservation project. Original Japanese geographic surveys (1906, 1912, 1913, 1921, 1933, and 1936) and picture postcards (1905-1944) have been translated and matched with current Chinese maps, satellite images, and SongLi's own personal photography (2002-2008). Supplemental data was based on Russian Urban Planning Records (1898 and 1903). (*) Requires free Google Earth software to view.
