This book was written by the 7th grade of Heart Butte School, Montana, in 1990. Heart Butte is in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains on the Blackfeet Reservation. The story was developed at the rate of one chapter per week in the same way that television sit-coms are written: as a group sitting around a table and discussing. The actual words were typed by Mary Scriver, the teacher. The story is about the yearning to belong and to be loved and reflects the lives that these students knew.
