Description:

A Buddhist book exploring the sutric teaching of ‘The Four Thoughts that turn the Mind to Practice’ as vividly relevant to our everyday lives: the extraordinarily precious opportunity to live as an honourable human being; the experience of impermanence that pervades our existence as an opportunity to awaken; the emotional and psychological patterning which dominates our lives (karma); and the seemingly endless cycle of dissatisfaction in which we imprison ourselves. Each chapter ends with a series of questions and answers which are both pragmatic and inspirational. Ngakma Nor'dzin has been a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism for more than twenty years. A wonderful book written by someone with a real understanding of what it is like trying to engage in spiritual practice and use life as it is, as part of that practice.
I can see that I will return time and again to this book, especially as a way of reminding myself why I should practise and why I should keep going- even when the going gets tough.

I think this is an excellent book on Buddhism. Normally the four thoughts can be considered rather difficult especially from the view of Sutra. If one considers precious human rebirth and how unlikely one is to have it, this can act a demotivator rather than a motivator. Viewed from Dzochen however, one realises what a precious human rebirth is and how radically different this is. Karma is also widely viewed as cause and effect, rather than as perception and response. This new perspective on the four truths makes this valuable for the beginner as well as more experienced practitioner. There is a great deal of warmth and humour in the writing that makes the material very accessible.

This is a book you can read more than once and have fresh insights and understandings each time. It's a beautifully clear and simple presentation of a profound teaching. The Four Thoughts, a traditional Buddhist teaching, are presented in a way that makes them relevant to people living busy full lives in modern society. I particularly like the many examples and references from every day life. The book is both profoundly spiritual yet down to earth and practical at the same time - a rare combination. There are currently relatively few well known female Buddhist writers. Ngakma Nor'dzin should be up there among them.
