Description:

Janie is a disturbed young woman battling against her troubled mind. Soon it is not just her sanity that is slipping away from her, but also her desire for survival. Richard, a psychiatrist, must first confront the haunting shadows of his own past before he can reach into Janie’s dark mind and rescue her. “The sense of panic returned, clawing at her sanity, pulling her down towards an immense darkness; a suffocating, endless, soul-destroying black void from which there could be no escape.”

compelling story [ No Rating ] 23 Mar 2006
This book was well written. I liked the way several characters and their stories emerged and the way the characters lives were intertwined. I liked the ending. I think this story would also be wonderful told from the perspective of Janie's mind. There are parts of the story where that occurs and those parts are intriguing.

Great work!

The italicised voice in the head is a brilliant stylistic device, and not one I have seen before. The characters are down-trodden and agonised, each in their own way. This is very well written and richly deserves all the rave reviews it has been getting.

My eyes were literally glued to the computer screen...they didnt blink once!!! Becky's life is so sad. She is so miserably unhappy, but will she really committ suicide?? You have me wondering if she really will. The voices we hear in our heads are very real...some of us have the strength to fight them off, some of us don't. I am adding this to my cart and I hope here in a few days I can order this and the red cross anthology book from you. I am very much impressed! There is just something about "dark minds" that fascinate me.....excellent writing....a definate "thriller"

Angela's characters are skilfully revealed through strong description and plausible actions. The subject matter is treated with sensitivity and compelling honesty. It is also accurate. For the insights alone, 'In Dark Minds' is essential reading. Thank you for creating a powerful story which is both confronting and enlightening.

I've only been privileged to read the preview so far, but those few pages were more than enough to drop me into the world of a highly disturbed young women in search of something that even she has no idea what it is.

If you like descriptive and emotive literary fiction that takes you deep into the heart of the human condition, this is definitely a must read.

Angela's book tells an intriguing story that will grab your attention from the first page and just won't let go. As someone who suffers from an anxiety disorder, I can attest to the accuracy of the portrayals of the characters...not just that of the main character, but most especially the reactions of the friends and family who wonder what's going on and what they can do. This is a very well-written and interesting book; I really enjoyed it.

With its intriguing start, introduction of characters and setting, and increasing sense of "otherness", the preview tugs at the reader, making you want to find out more. Angela's writing is sometimes spare, sometimes poetic, always engaging and empathetic. In Dark Minds promises to be a thoughtful exposition of the descent into mental illness.

From reading the preview alone this story captures your attention and holds you captive. Living with mental illness within a family is chaotic, often leaving loved ones in a constant state of worry and upheaval. This story opens a surreal window into a tortured, very frightened mind. You feel for her, you feel for the ones she will desert, and you feel for the times she will miss due to fear to live through painful memories... Ms. Hooper is able to give a realistic insight into a young woman's troubled mind as she struggles to hold on to sanity...

I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially to anyone who has had the spectre of mental illness touch themselves or a family member.

This is a subject matter maybe a little too close to home for some of us- however, it is told in a voicxe that reflects the understanding of some "non" fictional thoughts. I myself have no attention span- and I read every page.. So that says something.
The fact that the author is from the U.K is apparent in her writing style making it all the more enjoyable to read. I sit and draw a world I would like to live in to escape the feelings of some of the people in that book. Wonderfuly written, and meaningful-

When it comes right down to it, we really don't want to know what's going on in the heads of people around us. The fantasy of telepathy would pale against the abject shock one would experience if the thoughts of one's best friend were laid bare. Half the time, we don't even want to know what's going on in our own heads!

That's what makes Angela Hooper's story In Dark Minds so creepy. It's essential that the we are exposed to the facets of Janie's mind. As creepy as that becomes, we walk with her. Hooper has created something of a story much like a wound that has scabbed over. Put a bandage on it, it'll heal. So why are we so tempted to pull off the bandage and pick at the scab?

Well done.

Although I would not choose to read this type of story normally, a serious subject with the depths of the mind in maelstrom, it is handled with extreme technical, dramatic and emotional skill right from the off. The style is such, I could never hope to emulate it, but, backtracking a tad, it is not my genre so perhaps it's best not to try. Although it's a happy accident, I am terrified of heights, so the opening paragraphs were very real. Actually, this goes to show that you've got it dead right, eh? Again, not my thing, but it certainly is my wife's. So, one download to you and a possible sale if she is gripped, as I expect her to be. Well done.

This book has a very authentic feel to it, either Angela Hooper has lived through and worked with scary situations and tragic lives such as Janie's, or she has spent a lot of time researching it. I have just bought the book after reading only the first few chapters, I simply have to know what happens next. Gripping story line, with believable characters and an entralling plot, everything a great book should have. I look forward to reading more, are there any more Angela Hooper books on the way?

As a registered nurse with over twenty years in the psychiatric speciality, I'd like to comment on the reality of the writing. I've worked with Janie! I know her (or patients very much like her). The depths of her emotions, the believability of her delusions, and, most importantly, the ability to make others (including the reader) believe them is incredible. Dynamite, Angela! In Dark Minds is an eventful journey into a disturbed mind. The brilliantly descriptive writing blends perfectly with the factual information about the disorder the young woman suffers from. Obviously a lot of research was done.
It is difficult to write a book of this type that could sustain my interest as I have always found books with emotional content a little hard to get into, but In Dark Minds grabbed me from the first page and I became so attached to the characters that I did not want the book to end.
I hope this will not be the last book Angela Hooper writes because that would be a terrible waste of extraordinary talent.

In Dark Minds we are led on the path that Janie walks, leaving men like Raymond and Daniel in her wake. In her quest to discover who she is, she may have lost the most important thing.

The first chapter had me sitting on my hands, anxious to see what Jamie does next, and if she in fact listens to the voices in her head.

30 May 2004 (updated 30 May 2004)
In Dark Minds is a literate portrait of madness and despair. Like a cat, author Angela Hooper digs into mental illness and flips it from one side to the next, examining how it affects not just the person who is ill, but everyone around them. In Dark Minds reads almost like a suspense thriller, but the stakes aren't some far fetched doomsday scenario: the stakes are survival of a single human soul. For fans of literate adult fiction.
