This is the first book I ever read that taught the cane as a martial arts weapon. It kindled my interest and I now specialize in the walking stick as a martial arts weapon.

It is a very good basic start when it comes to teaching people that "the cane is more than just a crutch."

Just received my copy of "The Cane as a Weapon" from Lulu today. Review= ***Please keep in mind I have no formal Martial training. I offer this review on the quality of the publication and its printing.*** The paper is of a heavier grade than regular "Magazine" paper and semi-gloss, also the cover is even heavier. This is a paper-back publication. The book measures 8-1/2 x 11-1/8. The book runs 66 pages + 1 blank page. All pictures are in black & white, very clear and in focus, with good lighting showing all the detail you could want. The captions with each pic are very clear and understandable. Even the original pics are very clear and in-focus. The print is 1/8" in height very clear and easily read. The chapters appear to be in a very logical order for training. Though I have barely started to read this publication, it is an "easy read" (because of the above mentioned propereties) and this makes it very enjoyable. Thank you Tony for updating and enhancing this very interesting publication. Now onto Lulu. I have never dealt with Lulu before, but would have no qualms about doing it again. My original order was "Oopsed" as they sent me the wrong publication. I contacted them via e-mail and within 24 hours they had contacted me back via e-mail. I e-mailed them the required information and within another 24 hours they had shipped out a new publication to me and an apology! Excellent customer service and very polite. Review of “The Cane As A Weapon” By A.C. Cunningham, First published 1912, Edited and expanded by Tony Wolf 2006 At three times the size of the 22 page, 1912 original offering, the latest version of “The Cane As A Weapon” offers far more than three times the value! A bold statement that I am sure the Old Gent, Andrew Chase Cunningham himself would have approved of. If not the wording then at least the conviction because Mr Cunningham comes across as a rather pragmatic man who had a firm conviction in his method and his mission! I first read “The Cane As A Weapon” some years ago, online via a copy archived in a Yahoo Group devoted to some form of stick combat or another. I felt it was of little value other than as an historical piece, mainly because of the few pages of words and even fewer illustrations. Half a handful of poses showing half the altercation! As far as gleaning anything of practical value from the work I confess I couldn’t really be bothered! Tony Wolf bothered though and I think there are many stick and cane aficionados and self defence groupies out there who will thank him for it. Not content with merely reprinting the original as some have done to quite a few historical texts of late, Tony went the extra distance and has produced a book that offers two books for the price of one! Firstly as a historical text it is now immensely more enjoyable with the inclusion of the photographs of a 1900’s thug (played by Tony’s son Josh) attacking our hero Cunningham (played by Tony himself) armed with his trusty malacca cane! The photographs and additional text add a much deeper dimension to the work and allows the 21st Century reader to more fully appreciate the pragmatism of men such as Cunningham and his era, a time of immense change and social upheaval throughout the world. The second book is the practical self defence guide Cunningham always intended to be there despite being let down, in my opinion, by the dearth of illustrations. The one hundred and seventy photographs Tony has added clearly demonstrate the techniques included in the original text and give us an accurate appreciation of what was always an effective method of self defence. For those who may suggest some of the new illustrations are interpretation more than direct representation, keep in mind Tony has a world renowned reputation as a fighting styles choreographer with a major role in bringing the action of J.R.R. Tolkeins’ “The Lord Of The Rings” trilogy to life for movie goers. For me, Tony breathes not only life, but dignity and respect into Mr A.C. Cunningham’s contribution in respect of the use of the Cane for self defence from so many years past.
