I've been a fan of D.C. Simpson's "Ozy & Millie" from the moment I discovered it and easily place it near the top of my favorite comics of all time list with "Calvin and Hobbes", "Bloom County", "Bone", etc.
"Never Grow Up" is a bittersweet joy to read, because while in many ways, it's my favorite of the "Ozy & Millie" collections, it's also the LAST. With this collection, the regular adventures of Ozy & Millie have come to a close, but they do so with class in these pages. D.C. Simpson has always been exceptional at characterization, but she was on fire writing the stories contained here. The characters here grow, change, learn and develop in ways that are so familiar and real as to evoke countless memories of this time in my own life. This collection is more than just a bunch of comic strips... it's an encapsulation of the time in our lives when we move from pure childhood to the first steps of adolescence. When we begin to truly question our lives and the status quo of our elementary school years. The time when we are old enough to really understand that thing will never be the same again. It's a powerful read when you look at it that way.
But, before I drown you all in praise over it's weight as a story, let me also remind you that above all else, "Ozy & Millie" is FUNNY! it's a great, entertaining read filled with laughs both subtle and laugh out loud.
The capper, though, is D.C. Simpson's always beautiful artwork. Delicate linework that evokes the best of Bill Watterson and Walk Kelly makes every detail a joy to take in. I can't recommend this collection enough. "Never Grow Up" is a must have!
