This review is for the softcover edition of Monsters of Myth. The book is effectively a "Monster Manual III," but for the 1st edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, or for use with the OSRIC (Old School Reference and Index Compilation) which retrofits the original 1st edition of the game in to the current-day OGL license, allowing publishers to produce new material for the original AD&D. The book is very much a tribute to the style and feel of classic AD&D, with art and text that old fans of the hobby will find fitting for the era of the late 70's to early 80's. The book would also prove useful to newer gamers who enjoy systems such as Castles & Crusades and other more recent "reductionist" style versions of the D20 system such as Basic Fantasy. In the end, if you still play 1st edition AD&D, or a system designed to emulate it's look and feel, then Monsters of Myth would make a fine addition to your collection. A well-written, collaborative effort. Pros: fun, easy to read and use, fully statted for use with OSRIC and AD&D, and easy to use in C&C. Cons: it's old school, not much use to modern gamers as such. I also didn't like that some of the beasts entered are derived, poorly, from "real" myth counterparts (such as the Nuckalavee)....the real mythic monsters are just as freaky as the versions presented here; some more attention to the sources would have added authenticity to the product, although it admitedly is in keeping with the spirit of 1st edition's revisionist approach to myth in the game.
