Description:

Step back into the 19th century as seen through the eyes of a woman who enjoyed attending the opera and having afternoon tea. Mary Wikoff Oliver was the wife of a successful businessman in Hastings, Nebraska during the 1880's and 1890's. Follow Mary and Oswald Oliver's lives through two of Mary's journals; one chronicling their newlywed days in 1881 and the other describing their First Class travels throughout Europe and the British Isles. Mary’s 1884 journal describes such highlights as catching a glimpse of Queen Marie Henrietta strolling the gardens at the Kings Palace in Brussels and ordering a dress from the world renowned couturier Redfern, dressmaker to Queen Victoria. Imagine traveling during an era when the modern form of communication was the telegraph and letter writing was the only way to learn of news from family and friends. Through Mary Wikoff Oliver’s diaries and photographs we're able to peek into the past and see what the life and times were life during a much different era.

This is a wonderful biography of an unusual woman, who, in her short life, lived, loved, travelled, observed, and, fortunately for us, kept extensive diaries. Mary Oliver was a beauty, as is evident in her photographs. The author, Julie Claydon, has done meticulous research, not only about Mary, but about her husband, Oswald, and his family,English/Irish, whose story goes back to Cromwell and beyond--colorful and distinguished people. Ms Claydon includes a lot of information and many photographs about the times in which Mary and Oswald lived. I think anyone interested in reading or writing a book about genealogy or history would do well to take Julie Claydon's book as an example of the best of both genres. I read right through it, and plan to read it again. Thank you, Julie Claydon!

This book really does take the reader back in time! It was easy reading, interesting, and entertaining! I enjoyed the book thoroughly and would recommend it to anyone of any age. I learned so many things about how people lived back then! Regardless if you as a reader are related to the Oliver family or not, the era was one of extreme interest! All the fascinating facts kept me entertained for hours! This book is a great party opener because everyone can talk about it! The author did a phenomenal job and all the long hours definitely paid off! I'm so proud of you mom! I LOVE YOU

Started the book on Monday morning and finished it that night. Very surprised how easy it was to read and how it flowed so well. I can't even begin to know the time and energy that must have been put into it with doing research and fact finding. I know for sure that I would not have wanted to go to a dance back then, having to fill out a dance card, not what it is today. Then thinking what the women had to wear and shoe sizes to small for there feet, sure has changed over time. Great job and can't wait for the next book
