Description:

What do Mongolians smuggle on board the Trans-Siberian Express? Where is Paradise and why is it cursed? How do you confuse a mugger in Brazil? In TRAVELS WITH MENSANS, you can find out. You’ll also get an insider’s perspective on what it feels like to sail a tall ship around the Canaries, to be a guest at a family wedding in Pakistan and to visit some of the world’s most beautiful and strangest places. This special collection of travel writing, by members of the high IQ society Mensa, remembers bygone worlds and considers the nature of travel memories, the pros and cons of travelling alone and the effects of tourists on the places they visit. TRAVELS WITH MENSANS – travel writing to make you think. Net proceeds from the sale of this book go to Médecins Sans Frontières (www.msf.org).

I think the “non-commercial” aspect of the book as well as the tie in with Medecins Sans Frontieres gives the book a special element that makes it attractive to Mensans as well as any travelers. It really takes you out of the usual tourist mindset, that of “sight-seeing” and “picture taking” and puts you in a thought-provoking and realistic view of the place you are traveling. Knowing that proceeds are given to Doctors without Borders gives me a sense that it is more about people traveling to experience life and trying to understand everything the world has to offer as well as attempting to make a difference in more than just their community.

Excellent travel book - differs from a standard travel book because it is full of interesting anecdotes contributed by many different people of all ages. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
