A Book of Five Swords and a Scroll will make an interesting addition to the libraries of those who are interested in the tradition, culture, and manufacturing and maintenance techniques of Japanese swords. The author blends history, technical detail, and fiction in an intriguing narrative that takes the reader through the various facets of Japanese sword making and, by extension, to some aspects of Japanese -- and American -- history and culture both past and more recent.

A fascinating overview of Japanese sword history plus a remarkable story about a POW, Randolph June, who accepted the Japanese Commanders family sword at the surrender. Marine Sergeant June was respected not just his mates but by the rather hard-nosed Japanese Commander who chose to surrender to June rather than to the American officers.
The author has created one of the best and simplist books about the history, manufacture and meaning of Japanese swords. While some of the pictures are low grade scans, the story is well and fully told.
