Description:

For the last forty years I have balanced my life between bringing up my two lovely daughters with my wife Andrea and partaking in my chosen sport of Spearfishing. My book is about my time spent diving in the British Spearfishing Team, from the alien Pacific coast of Peru with its large Seals and giant Jelly Fish to the shark infested waters of South Africa and many other areas of the world. It covers events from shark attacks and sunken Portuguese treasure wrecks to the loss of close friends who have died pursuing the sport they loved.

Competitive spearfishing is a very demanding sport were the diver takes only the breath in his lungs down with him. At the peak of my fitness my underwater times, known in the trade as bottom times, could exceed four minutes. Some people can hold their breath whilst sitting in the bath or a pool but it all changes when diving to depths of over a hundred foot to be confronted by sharks, morays, or conger eels in the dark confines of a rusting wreck.

A fascinating insight into an underwater world which most of us will never know. This book is gripping and easy to read. It is a real life story that will make you laugh and cry. A great read, not just for the divers.

I had no previous knowledge of this strange world, where otherwise sane men will sit on the bottom of a raging sea holding their breath to dangerous limits in the hope of a chance to spear a once-in-a-lifetime fish. But as I read Eric Smith's engaging personal journey, from a boy with a makeshift curtain-rod spear landing his first fish off the local beach, to competitor in the extreme situations of the European and world championships, I was drawn in and gripped.

This book bears no relation to the puffed-up autobiographies found in many sports, but is a series of episodes that illustrate the real behind-the-scenes experience of someone who has really been there and has done it for his own reasons. The desire to hunt fish in this way has something timeless about it, that would probably be recognised by men from other centuries.

The will to push the boundaries far beyond anything recognisable to the rest of us has taken Eric along the way to extreme situations, which he describes with a witty and modest style.

I recommend this book as a good read to anyone, not just divers.

Spearfishing at its best in the UK [ No Rating ] 18 Feb 2007
Fantastic book for every diver. A very good read for anyone who wants to get into spearfishing on breathold diving. I could not put this book down when I started to read it. This guy is a legend in British Spearfishing circles and has written a well informed book for all types of spearfishing in the UK and abroad. I would recommend this to all divers across the spectrum to open your eyes to the most selective form of fishing in the world.
