Description:

Hobart at Home is set deep in the English countryside, during the present day. The two main character are Hobart, a farmer who still works the land even though he is well into his seventies, and Peter his thirty something nephew. Hobart is a pugnacious, yet loveable rogue, who manipulates his long suffering nephew into numerous tricky situations; including, hunting an ostrich with a smelly sock, visiting France in a home made balloon, exploding the farm's best cow, and shooting the world's only homing pig. Hobart is the kind of man that you like to meet, but can't wait to walk away from. His home made philosophy is: "Everything's okay, so long as there's plenty o' beer ter be drunk." Recently windowed, Hobart is on the look out for someone to cook, clean and tidy up for him, a point his nephew misses until it's far too late. Hobart is a forceful character, with strong views, and woe betides anyone who disagrees with him.

First, I love the cover design. The drawing is superb and the orange reminds me of the old Penguin paperbacks of the sixties. The writing shows a strong command of dialogue and the way English country folk actually speak. There is also a vivid imagination at work here, and plenty of humour. For some reason I was reminded a little of Spike Milligan's "Puckoon" which was a brilliant little novel. Excellent, zany British comedy!
