Description:

As an Emergency Medical Technician driven to save lives, I nearly lost mine to the failures. Each loss continued to fray the tether that held my sanity to this world. While searching for an understanding of death amidst my own alcoholic frenzy, I stumbled upon the meaning of life, and a story of self-sacrifice and redemption materialized through my eventual acceptance of the turmoil that is life. I call it The Dust of Man. I was 20-years-old when I started my EMS career as an advanced Emergency Medical Technician in a rural area. For seven years I worked with a volunteer ambulance squad with only one other emergency medical technician. The lack of volunteers made it necessary for me to go on every call possible, including those involving family. It seemed my grasp on reality would slip at any moment.

A must read! [ No Rating ] 24 Apr 2008
From the moment you first begin reading page one, readers can immediately see that this is no ordinary autobiography. This is the true story of a man who has managed to overcome his inner struggle and find a new place, as well as a new path, to take in this world. As you read, you walk side by side with Luke through his memoirs: you cry with him, you feel for him, you witness the many trails he has gone through, while doing God’s work without even realizing it. This extremely well written and moving account of the life of a young EMT, who had to see and deal with more than you could ever imagine, tugs at your heart strings like no other autobiography you may have read before. THE DUST OF MAN is a must read, and is a written example of how God works through us in many unbelievable ways to reach out and inspire us.

A truly amazing book. Luke Webster has a gift to draw a reader into his world and soul. A sad, realistic outlook on what a rural EMT faces that becomes inspirational with Luke's struggles to come to terms with very difficult situations. Life lessons can be learned through him and his book. A definite must read!

What is life like for a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician serving in a small community? Or more importantly, what effect does such a job have on those who willingly perform it?

Rescue workers are the modern-day heroes of our society, wielding IV kits, backboards and defib. machines in place of superhuman strength, speed and X-ray vision. They are expected to function perfectly and without emotion at a moment's notice. They can't get flustered or scared in the face of chaos. Time after time, they are all that stands between victims and death, doing everything they can to protect the one and defeat the other.

But they are human. Just flesh and bone.

Sometimes they fail. Sometimes their job gets the best of them. They have hearts that break and minds that struggle with the horrors they have seen. And often enough, for those serving in small communities, it’s family and friends that they are called upon to save.

THE DUST OF MAN is an autobiographical account of one man’s struggle with the hardships of life as a volunteer EMT in upstate New York. Written with an appealing honesty and a storyteller’s gift of placing the reader in the moment, this book is an experience not to be missed. From house fires and MVA’s (motor vehicle accidents) to rafting accidents and family tragedies, you will experience what the author experienced and never look at rescue workers the same way again.
