Wham! Bang! I just finished reading Professor Stone by Wayne Skiver from Wild Cat Books, and it was slam bang action from beginning to end, like riding in a barrel off Niagra Falls. There were Egyptian mummies coming out of the closets! Dinosaurs on a mysterious island! Nazi robots, Doctor Phobus The Fear Master, The Himalayas and the Abominable Snowman! And to battle all this evil was our hero, Professor Stone – or the Man Mountain, if you prefer; Stone is about 90% Doc Savage, 2% Indiana Jones and 8% The Destroyer. He stands six and a half foot tall, and is solid muscle, both a physical and a mental giant. To add to the Savage legend, his father was named Clark (as in Clark Savage), and his mother was named Norma (from Norma Dent, for those who didn’t know), and then, there is the Dent Building, if we had any doubts. For those Destroyer fans, that like the comic book martial arts, you’ll especially like these stories. A karate blow – or kick – can cause a small earthquake, our heroes can move so fast, they can dodge bullets, and I expect they would survive should they jump out of a thirty floor window, and land safely on the sidewalk far below!
This 173-page book contains several short stories, leading up to the final novelette, “The Eye of Re”, and is all fast and furious action with one fight scene after another. Not to say there is no plot, for the stories all have a plot, but the action doesn’t suffer because of a plot, if you know what I mean. It never slows down! It is that wild ride over the Niagra Falls in a barrel, it’s never going to end. Another fight, another escape from some deadly danger, or from an assassin trying to kill you. Somewhere along the way, our hero reaches the final objective, and the plot unravels, only after bloody corpses litter the path behind him.
My one complaint? Well, with all the weirdness going on, there were no aliens or UFOs!
