Mr. Young has done a great job in providing a balance view of the Padres organization. He managed to describe the Padres successes and failings without being too dependent on either just statistics nor merely a fan's perspectives. The use of statistical tools in the book is easy to understand and not overwhelming. From a fan's perspective (the rah-rah spirit in me), the book could probably use some more passions. However, there is one evidence that Mr. Young is quite passionate about his Padres. Nobody quits one's job to write a book about his team if he's not passionate about it. For the fans of the Padres, this is the book to go back and see a little bit of how the organization was doing in 2006 and what direction it may be going in 2007. There are reliving of the magical season of 1998 and its quick ending, and the historical 3000th hit by Mr. Padres, Tony Gwynn, who is going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. The inclusion of a game descriptions inning by inning is worth the read and painted the ups and downs in a baseball game, and show the attractions of baseball for many fans. The fact that the game included is not the already hyped-up Dodgers-Padres extra inning game late in the 2006 season shows that Mr. Young is indeed a Padres fan. That and the game was already overexposed and in the end just another game. The Padres won the division, in the process beating the Dodgers in 13 out of 19 meetings. Take that! Wait, this is supposed to be a review. OK, it's a good chapter. Moving on. For those who aren't a big fan of the GM, Kevin Towers, the chapter on his deals should be an eye-opener. Whether it would change mind or add more fuel to the discussion, it is a very good chapter that's informative and based on merits and the situations at the time of each deal. There are some information on how good the team was in the past based on the players the Padres have had since their inception in 1969. These chapters are good for reminiscing, for discussing who should be the top players by positions, who could have been and who has been great. As for direction of the team going forward, this can be glimpsed from the way the teams are constructed, the way deals are made and the inside look into how two organizations are successful despite the smaller budget they have, the A's and the Twins. Overall, a very good book to read for fans of baseball and the Padres. And it can be read in mutliple sittings. Go buy it!
