This is such a wonderful compilation of family data for the three LOGGINS: James, John and William. HOWEVER, the authors connection and TITLE use for the John LOGAN/LOGGAN of Augusta Co., VA, whose 1778 will they used to establish connection [by use of the children named], is WRONG. John LOGAN of Augusta is NOT a relation of this family.
John Sr., left his plantation to his sons John and William LOGAN who resided there. Tax, land deeds, land transfers and court records will prove this. John Jr. died in 1810 and his will leaves this plantation to his nephews, sons of his sister Sarah Seawright.
Sarah and brother William LOGAN are named in numerous land dealings in VA for the Seawright family.
Son James, born 1733 Ireland, married Hannah Irvine, resided in Rockbridge VA until his death in 1825.
Son Alexander recieved land from his father John LOGAN, in the Borden Track of Augusta VA 1753, which he and wife Rachel then sold in 1763. The John LOGAN/LOGGAN of Augusta was very active with the New Providence Church and Presbyterian Dessenters c 1754-1771.He was an early elder in the church c 1754 - as recorded in the Augusta County, VA courts.
The wife of John LOGAN of Augusta is MARGARET [not Mary] as she was the executor of his will and appears in Augusta Court in August 1778 in regard to the estate. Appraisers and neighbors are in Augusta court October 1778. A map of early Borden Track outlines the plantation as wells as neighbors by name.
James LOGGINS, the ancestor presented here, married Anne WILLIAMS widow of Robert Williams who died C 1766 in Lunenburg VA. The 320a of land she transfers c 1772 is her widows dower from deceased husband R. Williams and his partner. It is unclear which of the children named in James LOGGINS 1798 will are hers. This James LOGGINS could not write his name and on his will uses a very disquished mark: I L, above the clerk of the court's written JAMES LOGGINS. In 1771, John LOGAN with James Wardlaw & Elders of the Church,re: land for church: son James LOGAN 1772 witness to exam for Wardlaw's wife release of dower for deed recorded in Augusta County Court. Both signed their names. As well as signing their own wills by signature not mark.
More research is needed to establish the true parentage of James, John and William LOGGINS. James Loggins and James Logan son of John of Augusta, reside in different parts of Virginia at the same time. Same for John Loggins and John Logan Jr. of Augusta.
The leap to connect to John Logan/Loggan of Augusta by simply using his 1778 will is a disservice to this family and their true Virginia History. Many LOGGINS families resided in the Brunswick/Lunenburg/Charolotte areas and deserve more investigation.
At no time in the Augusta Courts, does JOHN LOGAN spell his name LOGGINS. His will, that is used in this work, is written LOGAN, his signature is copied as LOGGAN, his inventory and widows dower LOGAN, as well as his children James, John and William LOGAN, church land deeds LOGAN, and so on.
In Brunswick/Lunenburg Co., VA, the name LOGINS, LIGONS, LOGGINS and the family of David LOGAN [died 1763] all reside in this close area AT THE SAME time as John LOGAN Sr. reside in AUGUSTA/BOTETOURT/ROCKBRIDGE Counties, Virginia. A case of two completly separate families.
Hopefully, a descendant will make use of the data started here, and with proper research methods, will discover the true parents of these three LOGGINS.
Until then, it would prudent to DISCONTINUE using the JOHN LOGAN/LOGGAN of Augusta County connection.
