This book is a result of 30 years of personal research on Ellis Dean, Sr. (1760s-1818) of Scott County, Virginia with 4 generations of his known descendants including Andrew Dean (1793-1870s) and his wife Margaret Penix. Included are 2 generations of the descendants of Joshua Penix (1760s-1827) who was one of the early settlers in Fort Boonesboro, Kentucky in 1777. There is also a brief Chapter on John Cathey (1710-1764) of Rowan County, North Carolina. John Cathey was the father of Ann Cathey who married Joshua Penix in 1784. There are over 50 pages of documents and photographs and a complete name index.

Laura Moncrief (also known in the past as Laura Lee) has a reputation for impeccable and tenacious research--not to mention a knack for bringing history and her ancestors' place in it to life. Decades literally go into each of her volumes, the first of which was typed with her youngest daughter sitting on her knees, her index meticulously organized on index cards on the floor before the age of personal computers.
