This is a thoroughly engaging book. The scope of stories here encompass so much of what we may aspire to in our society, from the hopes and dreams of individuals to the results of what may happen when we lose sight of what we are. Of what we may become if the integrity of governments fail, of what we can do with our world, and the dangers inherent if we continue on a path of exploitation and greed.
DJ Burnham writes with wit, humour and sophistication, cleverly weaving fiction from a mature observation of ourselves and our world. His speculations, while written in the genre of science fiction, have a great deal of relevance to our present day world and the world of, just possibly, tomorrow.

Rob Spalding has just reviewed 'Test Drive' for the Whispers of Wickedness website.

"For a first collection, there is a very high hit ratio of really good stories. He makes his characters and story the focus of his writing, letting the ideas be a tool for the telling, rather than focus the story on the scientific idea – which makes a nice change from many other short science fiction stories I’ve read."

Charles Packer has just reviewed 'Test Drive' for the Sci-fi Online website.

"…reminiscent of the best sci-fi short stories written in the nineteen fifties and sixties…"
"… If you read as much as I do you often get a feel for where the story is taking you and often get to the twist before the author does, but Borrowed Time had me guessing right to the end…"

I loved Biker's Dozen, both the detailed future technology of the stealthracer and the description of Jack's trip across planet Safeet. It was believably evocative of what an alien world might be like. It's a wild ride!

Clever plots and fascinating ideas with references that hint of a consciousness of other concepts, theories and ideologies. These carefully crafted stories, often with more than a touch of humour, are meticulous in detail yet always a joy to read. Add to that the richness and diversity of the subject matter, this is an excellent read that I would commend to anyone.

Can't wait for a full length novel. Love the Inky Well logo too.
DJ Burnham is a creative genius.

Each story in this collection is a mini- masterpiece; there is no better way than describing them. That is by no means an exaggeration. What DJ does with such precision is describe each detail so vividly and exactly that he draws you- seemingly without effort- in to his warped wonderful world. This is, quite simply put, a must have book.

Most of the short stories contained in Test Drive are fully-formed mini-novels in their own right, but it’s Burnham’s meticulous attention to the scientific facts and theories that underpin his stories that makes them a pleasure to read, and there’s a great mix of serious, funny and bizarre, not just fantasies but ironic reflections on today’s world. And to add the icing to the cake I note that the artwork for the cover is also of his own construction. Highly Recommended.
