Description:

After his father’s suicide in the summer of 2006, author Brian J. Martin was faced with the grim yet undeniable reality that mental illness runs in his family. As a teenager, in fact, Brian suffered from bouts of severe depression and nearly took his own life before beginning the long journey to recovery through faith, hope, and love. Rather than continue the tradition of silence, all too familiar to so many families, he decided to share his experiences with hope that others may find his light a guide. In his first book, Martin (primarily a screenwriter) expounds on his conviction that the theological virtues are not just a respectable model of Christian living, but an essential truth of human existence that intrinsically point us to community with God and each other.

Martin is an incredible writer.. and a wonderfully deep thinker! I really -- enjoyed isn't the right word.. but it's the only one coming to mind.. I really.. deeply appreciated (that's more accurate.. but more awkward :-P) the book, and his willingness to share. This book is a wonderful testimony to show a path out of the darkness of depression.
Excellent read.

From tragedy to joy, the author gives testimony of his life experiences and difficulties. Using citations and vivid imagery in his words, often brilliantly shown together, the author describes his personal journey culminating in faith and hope.

The subject matter is mature and sometimes difficult to grasp, but not so graphic as to be inappropriate for younger readers. Those who share similar experiences can readily recognize themselves and many respects giving further life to this story of conquered adversity.

The flow of the book makes for an easy read, though the deeper aspects often call the reader to reflect seriously about the fate of others and one’s self, and the common journey we are all taking together within life.

Anyone who has had tragic difficulties in life will appreciate this book.

I couldn't stop reading this book! I opened it the moment it came through the mail, and continued to the end. His writing style reminds me of Hemmingway, and brings to light the issues we keep in the dark.
