Description:

The Premium edition contains full colour as well as black and white photos.

In 1940 a network of defences was hastily built all over the British Isles to prevent an anticipated German invasion. Sited at road junctions, canals and other strategic points these constructions were called "pillboxes".

Despite the passage of time many of these remain as permanent monuments and a silent tribute to the courage and tenacity of the British people in the dark days of 1940.

This book records some of what remains today and will be of interest to those interested in military history as well as enthusiasts of the english landscape.

The author has produced a fascinating collection on a significant historical topic. I remember in particular visiting the German bunkers in Jersey, Channel Islands in my youth, but until now nobody to my knowledge has paid much attention to the bunkers/pillboxes (is there a difference?) built on the UK mainland.

Ian Sanders speaks of an an unfought battle - and we should all be very grateful for it having been so. That it was unfought is thanks mainly to Winston Churchill's speeches and the efforts of the Few, the fighter pilots who won the Battle of Britain in the skies above these pillboxes, with support and prayers from below.

Thank you, Ian, for publishing your book.
