Description:

This is a book of interventions for various emotional problems common to soldiers, i.e., homesickness, depression, anxiety, anger, etc. It was written for the soldier who will not go for help for fear it will harm their career. It is also meant to provide assistance when there is none, due to shortages or distant locations of support personnel. In July 2004 the New England Journal of Medicine examined mental health problems among 3671 soldiers and Marines three to four months after their return from Afghanistan or Irag. Up to 17% of these soldiers screened positive for major depression, generalized anxiety or PTSD. Of these 17%, only 23% sought treatment. This would make a great gift to give to your favorite hero.

So impressed am I with this book that I've forwarded the link to a friend, who herself suffers from ptsd. People can often help themselves if they only know where to begin. Just a glance at the Table of Contents tells me this book provides the guidance and workable solutions they need to start the healing process.

It is a pity that such a book is necessary, but that it is so I have no doubt at all. There must be many young soldiers serving in Iraq as well as veterans in need of counselling and this book will be a first step to that, or perhaps an alternative in some cases. The need is all the greater as the intervention by the USA and Britain with other allies in Iraq has been, to put it mildly, controversial in the eyes of the rest of the world - and even as viewed by a large percentage of the American and British people. The huge number of civilian and military casualties is bound to lead to self-questioning and doubts among the military serving in that country, and such doubts can lead to mental discomfort and illness if not properly addressed.

Being a combat soldier and a twenty year veteran, I find this book to be a valuable tool for our men and women of war. In the field their are no other help available but your buddies and this book is a great buddy to have in a time of need. Education is the first step to recovery and good mental health. I am graetful for the author of this book and I encourage our Defense Department and Military leaders on the local level to review this material and pass it on to our troops.

Sincerly,
1SG, Johnny Cannon
