Aydil Vice and her Disgustin' Hair Knots is a delightful story about a very likable five-year-old. Aydil's reactions to having her hair brushed are very believable. (I remember when my daughter was that age and hated to have the tangles combed out of her waist-length hair.) The book is sprinkled with laugh-out-loud comments by Aydil, while showing the fears and jealousies of Aydil and her classmates in a true-to-life manner. When Aydil and her best friend, Liz have a contest to see who can have the most tangled hair, a third girl gets them in trouble, giving the story depth as well as drama/comedy.

Just like a 'grown-up' book, Aydil Vice is divided into chapters, but the 70 pages are a quick read with short sentences, and a direct, easy-to-grasp plot line. Adorable illustrations are sprinkled throughout, capturing the spirit of five-year-old Aydil. The book ends happily, leaving the reader wanting more.

A cute read, one you will enjoy reading with your child. I highly recommend this book to children who love Junie B. Jones and Judy Moody.

Aydil Vice and her Disgustin' Hair Knots is a delightful story. A lot of books claim to be suitable for all ages, but Aydil's tale has a rare appeal. It's a story of family, friendship, troubles and solutions and, of course, disgustin' hair knots. Aydil tells her own story in a thoroughly convincing manner. I could almost believe she was sitting in front of me, bright-eyed, jumping up now and again to twirl and dance, and telling me about her life. The syntax is very realistic. Some people put "cute" language in the mouths of child characters, but Aydil speaks, thinks and acts like a real child. Brava, Aydil!

By the way, don't let the 70 pp count bother you if you're a young reader. There are lots of lively pictures and plenty of white space so the story races along.
