Description:

Don't be left out of the Chinese opportunity. These publishers are buying across a range of subject areas-from fiction for adults and children, through mind, body, spirit and lifestyles, to English language teaching materials and dictionaries. Also important are titles covering the latest developments in western technology, business practice and military history. The Global Learning Initiative (GLI) sponsored a program devoted to the discussion of what Asian markets are interested in from foreign publishers at the Bologna Book Fair last April. After noting a significant increase in Asian rights traffic in Frankfurt, ForeWord decided to attend the Beijing Book Fair in September as we were anxious to get some insights on what sort of content is of interest. In addition to business, fiction, self-help and mind/body/spirit titles, of special note was educational books for children of all ages. Participants from Scholastic (Linda Warfel), The LAB Education Research Center (Jung Sook Kim) and Moojin (Yunj-Yun) primarily discussed English Language Learning (ELL) which is far and away the fastest growing segment, with Japan, Korea and Taiwan leading the market. The school systems do not provide textbooks in a similar fashion to American and European school systems. Asian parents seem to want student achievement rather than enjoyment... they are very competitive with other parents on skill levels of their children. Audio component for materials is almost essential. And because they are so competitive, parents buy much more than the required texts outlined by schools. We were also reminded that the academic year starts in April, with much larger class sizes (averaging 45+) and English is an option as young as kindergarten, compulsory by the third grade. Interest in Chapter books is growing rapidly, and leveled readers (i.e. skill level 1, 2, 3, etc.) should be noted on covers of book. If you can provide simplified teaching guides for self-study, chances improve dramatically. Most teachers placed in English were not trained to teach English, but typically picked it up faster and were placed there! Therefore, anything you can provide that helps them improve their own skills with phonics and grammar also emphasized. Finally, bookstores are very active in the ELL process, providing seminars for parents on different resources available and how to use them. Clients who offer titles in the children's/education categories should participate in our collective stand at Beijing book fair--where many agents from Asia and other emerging countries will be on hand. The fee is $150 per title, or $500 for a shelf which holds five (different) titles. Your book(s) will have face-out exposure and be listed in our catalogue. We have meetings at the booth with agents and distribution clients during the fair--many whom have done business with us over the years and know we host a representative slice of the U.S. independent press marketplace at our booth. When agents express an interest in any title, we exchange information and deliver to you upon our return, usually with a general letter about the show itself and recommended ways to proceed. If this is something you would like to pursue, please contact us immediately for details, register today. The deadlines for shipping materials is only weeks away.
