The main character, Detective Inspector Darren Sirk - complex and flawed - believes in combating evil with a brazen disregard for police rules. His colleagues, full of doubts about what the force can actually achieve in a society in constant turmoil, are just as compelling.
I whole-heartedly recommend this book, which broaches the subject of racism with courage and originality, to anyone who enjoys crime fiction at its best.
