This book is aimed at Windows users, and that removed about half of it from usefulness for me. But the other half was so useful that even just skimming it allowed me to take my book written in OpenOffice and finally get the darned page numbers right! I was able to reformat the entire book (235 pages) in just one day. That's how effective LyX is.
The author does a good job of giving you every detail you need to know, or pointing you to it where it already exists, which makes this book more meat and less filler. I like that. Well written, but it is obvious to me that Truoc is not a native speaker of English, and this shows in the writing. While it's fully understandable, the book needs an edit by a native speaker to achieve a final polish of professionalism.
This book was well worth what I paid for the download, even though half of it doesn't apply to me because I use Linux. Great job, Truoc Duong!
"You Can Write, Publish, And Sell On Lulu, Amazon, Barnes & Nobles.com, And Tons Of Other Online Bookstores Worldwide In A Couples Of Days With FREE Powerful Self Publishing Software Packages!"
because that is what this book is all about!
Not only it does a great job of showing you how to get, install, and use great free self publishing software packages to write, publish, and sell your paper books and ebooks on Lulu, it also covers in detail how to sell it on Amazon, Barnes & Noble.com, and many other online bookstores worldwide!
This is not just a book. It is a complete easy and powerful all-in-one sell publising system, which anybody - novice as well as expert, can use to write, publish, and sell in no time all!
Traditionally, after you have bought and read a self publishing book, you will have to buy some publishing software, and then buy more books to learn how to use the software. Not only will you have to spend hundreds of dollars on books, you will also end up wasting weeks or even months before you can actually publish your book.
This book is completely different from all self publishing books that I know. It shows you where to download and how to install all the great and free software you need. Then it teaches you clearly, step-by-step, how to use those software to create, publish, and sell your perfect paper books and ebooks!
I am amazed how effective the author's great innovative WYPIWYL (What You Play Is What You Learn) teaching technique is. By playing along with the author, I was able to create a perfectly professional ebook in only a couple of hours. The ebook was a well crafted PDF file with bookmarks, hyperlinks, perfect table of contents, table of figures, headings, footings, cross-references, appendix, bibliography, indexes, etc.
The book also shows you how to create your book covers graphic images with the correct dimension and resolution required by the publishers, and how to select the correct HTML color codes for the text and background colors for your book covers. Then it shows you how to publish and sell your book on Lulu.com for free.
It also shows you how to sell your book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble.com, and many online bookstores worldwide for a very little cost. It shows how to do all this with a very few simple steps.
If you have your manuscript ready, this book can certainly help you turn your manuscript into a perfect book and then publish and sell it as paper book and ebook on Lulu, Amazon, Barnes & Noble.com, and many other online bookstores worlwide within a couple of days.
If you seriously want to write, publish, and sell your paper books and ebooks like the pros and do not want to spend much time and money at all, I strongly recommend that you should definitely get this book.
By the way, if you are a college student who wants to create professionally formatted term papers, reports, and thesis, this book will surely help you earn the best grade!
First, I apologize for this long story. But I must tell it. Otherwise, you would not understand why I feel so happy about this book.
I just got out of college and just got my first professional job as a Technical Writer. My first assignment was to edit and re-format a technical reference manual, which had twenty-five chapters with over 500 pages. It was written in MS Word. My job was to add and remove some chapters, and add, change, and delete numerous sections from other chapters. The tasks seemed so easy. So I promised by boss that I would get it done in less than a week.
He told me that the lady before me had estimated that it would take her at least a month. I smiled because I thought that lady had over estimated the job. When I went over the manual carefully the next day, I became terrified because all the cross references in it were done manually. That is, that lady had to type every single phrase like these "see section 10.2 on page 109" and "see Figure 7.1 on page 77", etc. There were hundreds of cross-references like that throughout the book. After I made the changes to the manual, the page, chapter, and section numbers would no longer be the same. That meant I had to read and re-read the manual hundreds of times in order to correct all the cross references. That would take me a month to finish it; just like the other person had estimated! What should I do now?
So I hurried and reached out to my old college buddies. One person suggested to me to use LyX, which he said, would help me solve the cross reference problem. But another person said LyX was very hard to install; It hung on him during the installation. Then another said that LyX generated terrible PDF files, on which the words were almost invisible. I became so hopeless! I went to the LyX website and checked out its tutorial page. There, I found the name of this book. After previewing it, I bought and downloaded it.
Then I downloaded and installed all the software mentioned in the book. At time, my computer hung for almost an hour. This is the point where most new LyX users would give up because they would think that their computer was dead! But thanks to the author, who clearly notified ahead of time about these long silences. So I had no problem at all in downloading and installing all the software mentioned in the book.
Then the rest of the time, I just played along with the author. I loved his genius WYPIWYL (What You Play Is What You Learn) method. After about two hours of playing with LyX, I felt like I had known LyX for a long time.
Then next day, I downloaded and installed the same set of software on my computer at work. And believe it or not? Two days later, I finished editing and re-formatting the entire manual, with perfect cross references and index list. The project was completed two days ahead of my estimate. When I emailed the beautifully looking PDF file of the new manual to my boss, he was so delighted. He went around and showed it to everyone in the office. Then he called me over and said:
"You did a great job! You've saved the company a lot of money! I apologize for having misjudged your talents. I want to promote you to a senior level."
"Thank you, very much!" I replied. My tear almost sprung out with joy.
Well, that is my story, folks! Thank you for reading my story. This book has already paid me back a hundred times over! I am sure it will be a great help to you too.
To the author, I would like to say: Thank you very much! I will surely read your other book soon! Please keep up your good work!
I had been looking for a book like this for a long time. At first, I tried to write my books with Word. But that piece of expensive junk did not generate PDF files for me. Then I used OO Writer, which was a pain in the neck to setup multi-section page layout. Then I heard about LaTeX. I bought The LeTeX Companion book, which was great. But LaTeX is not something that you can learn over night. Then I heard about LyX, which turned out to be a great and easy front end for LaTeX. I loved it. But then I had a number of questions when using it. Since there was no published book at all about LyX, I had to spend a lot of time searching for the answers myself.
This book gave me all the answers about LyX and more. The author does not just teach you about LyX, he shares with you his experience about the entire proccess of writing, formatting, and publishing your first book. I like his straight hand-on approach. There is no "history about LyX" or any other nonsense talk about self publishings and stuffs that waste your time like what you see in many other books. Reading this book, I felt like my buddy was sitting next to my computer and pointing his finger at my keyboard showing me what key to press. I just opened the book and went right to work.
I like the author's innovative WYPIWYL (What You Play Is What You Learn) method. This is a genius invention in its own right! Going from the beginning to the end of the book, I felt like I was really playing the entire time. Just like the author had said about his WYPIWYL method that "It is hard to remember what you try to learn. But it is difficult to forget what you have fun playing with." I finished the whole book in just a couple of hours. Then I threw the book aside because I remembered everything that I had learned, (or played with, rather). It was amazing!
If I did not find and purchase this book, I would still be roaming the web to look for answers to my questions about LyX and self publishing stuffs right now, and not have been so happy!
If you want to write and publish professionally looking paper books and ebooks, you should definitely get this book. It will surely save you a lot of time and money!
