In 1796, a young English bricklayer named George Vason sailed to the South Pacific to become a missionary. He settled in the Kingdom of Tonga, but soon abandoned his faith and went native, getting tattooed, marrying a 14-year-old princess, and operating a plantation. After civil war breaks out and some of the missionaries are killed, Vason eventually returns to England, where he wrote this book in 1810 as a warning to other young men proposing to become missionaries.
