These stories and poems have been written over a span of thirty years or so. Many of the poems and stories take place along the Rhode Island shoreline (or in the rolling hills of northeastern Connecticut) and northern New England (Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and Maine’s North Woods). The story (a trip-tych), Yohnny, describes a world that has nearly vanished and I was inspired by Irving Howe’s wonderful book, World of Our Fathers. Yohnny is based on actual events in which I try to recreate stories that I heard--an exploration of remembrance if you will--as a small boy spending time with his grandfather. Little by little, I would hear him talk about various events in his life. His was a laconic generation that rarely if ever expressed their emotions, and obviously this is a very different mind-set from our own time, and that circumstance challenged me as a writer.
