Book 1, Out of the Gray, features two teenage narrators: Alex Verin, a 14-year-old son of a U.S. Congress Representative, is faced to choose between his family loyalties and moral conviction when he learns of a planned assassination attempt of an alien (Hannarian)ambassador named Jernard. Rica Miller, a 13-year-old Hannarian abandoned in a Baltimore shopping mall when she was a small child, and her adopted mother Rebecca meet Jernard on a transport under less-than-coincidental circumstances. The two sides of the story converge into a much bigger conspiracy than either teen realizes, and the results bring both Earth and Hannaria to the brink of war.
