James Malcolm Rymer likely wrote Varney, though some give the credit to Thomas Preskett Prest. Different from the suave, Bela Lugosi portrayal of a vampire, Varney is an uncompromising villain bent on the slacking of his unholy thirst for blood. Varney appears as a rotting, rapacious corpse skulking through the night in search of that crimson liquid that gives him both succor and sustainance. Despite being a major progenitor of vampire fiction in the English-speaking world, Varney remains in Dracula's shadow of greater popularity. Somehow, one thinks Varney prefers the shadow to the limelight the Count apparently so enjoys.
