Dabetswe Natasha

A closeted writer for many years, I have finally started publishing and posting my work. I am currently active in an online writing community at The Writ, although I'm on sabbatical from its publication. I am actively reading my poetry at Dalva bar in the Mission district of San Francisco, as well as the 16th and Mission Mic-less Open Mic.

Though I experiment with various styles of writing, I find my strengths in the ability to paint broad pictures with very little paint and to draw out complexity within simplicity. I enjoy playing with words, double entendres, vagueness, and metaphors. At times, I get playful, while at other times, my emotions are raw. I enjoy snapshot perspectives, taking a moment at a time to reflect upon. I come from a background of Psychology. Cross-cultural perspectives interest me greatly, so do existentialist issues as well.

I am also deeply influenced by David Usher's lyrical and musical styles. Though my works have been compared often to Emily Dickinson and once to Dorothy Parker, my own personal style is distinctively intimate, honest and reflective, with a touch of starkness and sentimentality in my complexity within simplicity. My focus is on the moment and fragments of whole, a literary photography to a certain extent, yet my works come around in full circle.

Though many of my work are free verse that are short pieces, I also like to let my creativity flow and produce longer poems or pieces with purposeful forms. From time to time, I try out rhyme, meter, and syntax. No matter which style I approach my writing, there is always a sense of rhythm--one that comes from my heart.

I sold my autographed copy of "Feathers on Peacock" for my own personal keepsake to someone who really wanted to purchase it for somewhat discounted price. With what I received from her payment, I donated $5 to Mae Tao Clinic via Paypal again.

I wanted to wait till more funds are generated to donate but I don't like money sitting on my hand intended for others, so I initiated the first donation with what I have so far, to Mae Tao Clinic (under Global Health Access Program in USA). Below is the receipt. I blocked my personal information out for privacy as this is a public site.

Donation Update

Dabetswe Natasha in A Writer's Blog
Tuesday 13 of May, 2008
So far, the sale for the book for donation towards the Burmese cause has taken off on its course. I shall donate to Mae Tao Clinic first as it is directly serving the humanitarian needs of refugees and poor villagers. In light of Cyclone Nargis and its political crisis, we see how this kind of compassionate need is crucial and of priority. As proceeds come, I will be donating on an on-going basis to both organizations.

Here is the break down of the sale of each book:

Revenue-$12.95
Cost of printing-$5.49
LuLu commission-$1.49
Final royalty profit-$5.97 (all of which will be donated to the selected organizations)

Any questions or clarifications, you can reach me at my email.

Upcoming Book for a Cause

Dabetswe Natasha in A Writer's Blog
Sunday 13 of April, 2008
After publishing "SnapShots", I was ready to take a break from releasing books for a while, but then recently I've been driven to publish my poems for an important cause - to help organizations that are serving the people of Burma. Thus, I'm currently working on a project to publish yet another book of my poems, and perhaps my essays on Burma and the struggle for freedom. Please stay tuned for more updates on this.

New Book Out Soon!

Dabetswe Natasha in A Writer's Blog
Thursday 14 of September, 2006
My new book "Snap Shots" will be published and released pretty soon, within the next few weeks. Do look out for it and come back to check it out. I'm also starting out with some ideas for the next book of poetry and possibly a book on prose I've written over the past few years. I've been taking a break from the online literary magazine WRITOracle but I have started performing poetry readings at Dalva in the Mission at 3121 16th Street in San Francisco, CA. If you are in the area, do come by. It's every 2nd and 4th Thursdays on the month from 7pm to 9pm.

Thank you so much for supporting my work as a writer and purchasing my book. Your support is very much like the revealing of a breathtaking scene of a field of wildflowers in the valley as a train passes by the country. I truly hope you enjoy the reading and it will be a gift as special to you as your support has been to me.

With much loving gratitude,
Dabetswe Natasha

Wonderful site! I'm hoping it'll all work out well for me. For now, I'm still busy with my volunteer staff writing for an online literary magazine publication.
