The Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science
Having read most of New Thought Literature over the last few years, my quest for the origins and inspirations of current New Thought literature eventually led me to discover Judge Trowards incredible writings. To the analytical mind of today that needs a solid foundation and understanding of how his arguments may be true, I find there is no comparison. Though written in turn of the century language which can be a little heady, his discussions and logical conclusions on how we are "distribution centers for divine unlimited creative power" are simply brilliant. I have not found any single other New Thought book that attempts to explain by "logical argument" from beginning to end, the path that leads the reader to understand the Laws of Cause and Effect and The Descent of Spirit into Matter and how to use these Laws to Create our own positive, unlimited life. The Creative Process in the Individual
It's astonishing that it was originally published in 1915, because the ideas are quite contemporary. Thomas Troward (1847 - 1916) was an assistant commissioner and later divisional judge in the North Indian Punjab from 1869 until 1896. He wrote several small volumes that have had a profound effect on the development of spiritual metaphysics, in particular that of the New Thought movement, of which the teaching known as Science of Mind is Troward's most direct legacy. Unlike a lot of metaphysical authors who treat the personality/conscious mind as some sort of "necessary evil," Troward believes that the whole purpose of Life & Evolution is the further development of the personality in the self-contemplation of Spirit. His reasoning on the nature of Spirit (perfect Life, Light, Love, Power & Beauty) is very convincing as are all his arguments. The Enchiridion of Epictetus: A manual for living
I would highly recommend the writings of Epictetus to anyone interested in Stoic Philosophy, or anyone at all for that matter. Epictetus should make for an excellent introduction to Stoic Philosophy, and the "Encheiridion" is an excellent introduction to Epictetus.
Possibly the most famous Stoic Philosopher is Marcus Aurelius, whose "Meditations" was written, not to be read as a philosophic treatise, but rather as a personal journal, complete with seemingly random entries and no apparent structure. Moreover, it is clear from his "Meditations" that Marcus Aurelius was greatly influenced by the teachings of Epictetus. In fact, according to Aulus Gellius, Herodes Atticus (who was Marcus Aurelius' teacher at the time) told Marcus Aurelius that Epictetus was the greatest of all the Stoic philosophers, which is quite convenient for us since most of the writings of earilier Stoics (such as Zeno of Citium, Cleanthes and Chrysippus) have been lost, probably in the burning of the Library of Alexandria.

The Mental Cure

Whilst the exact circulation figures for these books is not known, a ninth edition of The Mental Cure was called for more than sixteen years after it was first issued; Primative Mind Cure went into at least five editions, and it is most likely that various editions of his other books appeared also.
One certain fact is that he was the first and indeed the only figure, aside from Mrs. Eddy, who attempted to work out a consistent philisophically supported system of what may be called mental or metaphysical healing, during the first two decades after the death of P. P. Quimby. The New Thought periodicals which began to appear in the late 1880's continued to carry advertisements for his books at least to the end of the century, and copies of the books were to be found in the major public libraries and the libraries of most New Thought leaders and centers.
