Services FAQ

KnowledgeBase > Services FAQ

If you need help with pre-publishing tasks, Lulu offers some design, editing, ISBN, marketing, and other great services. Lulu Services are available as the Publishing Pack or as Individual Services. Lulu also has the Lulu Services Marketplace where independent service providers are vying for your attention.

In addition you can peruse the Lulu Forums where our expert users provide many tips and tricks for preparing your manuscript. Search the Help on the site for the answers to your questions before posting to the forums though.

What is the Services Marketplace?

The Lulu Services Marketplace provides a place for authors and creators to connect with third-party service providers. These service providers, although hand-picked by Lulu, are not members of the Lulu staff. The Services Marketplace simply brings together those seeking publishing services with those who provide them and handles financial transactions. The Services Marketplace gives creators access to five broad categories of publishing services:

  • Pre-publishing services, including manuscript reviews, proofreading, formatting and editing.
  • Graphics services, including book cover design, illustrations and more.
  • Publishing services, including manuscript layout, PDF creation and consultation services.
  • Translation services.
  • Marketing services, including press releases, reviews, websites and other marketing packages.

Purchase services through the Lulu Services Marketplace> (in the Community tab). The Service Provider should contact you within 3 business days of your purchase. Read the complete description of a service carefully before purchasing it.

Contact that Service Provider directly for answers to questions about a specific service. Use the "E-mail this provider" link on the detail page.

For more information about Lulu Service Providers, see Terms and Conditions of the Lulu Services Marketplace>.

Terms and Conditions of the Lulu Services Marketplace

Legal Agreement

Thank you for using Lulu ("Site"). The terms set forth in this document apply to all participants in the services marketplace section of Lulu who sell services ("Providers") or purchase services ("Purchasers"), and constitute a binding, legal agreement ("Agreement") between the Provider or Purchaser and Lulu (Lulu Enterprises, Inc., and Lulu Press, Inc.--collectively, "Lulu" or "We").

Please read the information below carefully. We may revise these terms from time to time by updating the text posted on this page. Revisions will take effect when we post them.

By using the Site, you accept the terms and conditions described below, and you warrant and represent that you have the legal capacity to enter into this Agreement.

The Services Marketplace is not for minors* *

Use of the Lulu services marketplace is only for individuals who can enter into legally binding contracts under applicable law.

Changes to the Site

We are always striving to improve and expand Lulu, which includes adding and changing features available on our site. For that reason we may modify this Site and the services available at it without notice or liability to users. We may also discontinue the Site and its services without notice or liability.

Lulu does not provide services* *

First and foremost, Lulu provides a means for individuals and businesses to publish and sell books and other intellectual property. Many Lulu users want or need services that Lulu does not provide. For that reason we have added the Services Marketplace to the Site in order to bring purchasers and service providers together.

Lulu provides the marketplace, but is not directly involved in transactions between Purchasers and Providers. It is important to recognize that Lulu has no control over the truth, accuracy, quality, or legality of statements made by users. Accurately identifying individuals through the Internet can be difficult or impossible. For that reason Lulu cannot and will not confirm the identities of users. We are also unable to verify the expertise, abilities, or qualifications of service providers.

We urge all Users to be cautious and to exercise common sense and good judgment when dealing with any Provider or other user of the Site. Talk to other users and take advantage of the ratings systems available before and after purchasing services.

Lulu adds a finder's fee to transactions between Purchasers and Providers in the marketplace because Lulu provides the means for Providers to find new customers. Providers and Purchasers are responsible for complying with all tax and legal requirements for any legal entity.

Lulu offers a list of providers of services

A number of providers offer services through Lulu. Listings include information and descriptions posted by the Providers themselves, and may also include reviews, ratings, or other information posted by users. Lulu offers this information as a service to Purchasers and cannot confirm or verify the information in the listings, including their truth, accuracy, or quality. Exercise caution and common sense as a Purchaser. You agree not to hold Lulu liable for loss or damage incurred as a result of the use of information contained within Provider listings.

Communicating with providers and other users

When you communicate with other users of the Site, that communication is between you and them. This includes communication related to the terms of goods or services being purchased, and to their delivery and/or execution. You agree not to hold Lulu liable for loss or damage as a result of your dealings with other users.

Third Party Content, Verification and Monitoring

Lulu offers a marketplace for content published by third parties and other Site users. Lulu has no editorial control over content published by users. Any opinions, advice, statements, services, offers, or other information expressed or made available by Lulu users--including authors, publishers, service providers, and others--are those of the respective author(s) or distributor(s) and not of Lulu. Lulu does not endorses or assume responsibility for the accuracy, reliability, or value of any opinion, advice, information or statement offered by Lulu users. Lulu does not verify if service providers are qualified to provide the services or advice they offer. You understand and acknowledge that Lulu is not responsible for and does not monitor content for accuracy or reliability.

Ratings System

As part of a community of Users, you will benefit from being able to read and post public feedback about other Users. You also agree to receive feedback from Users with whom you have dealt and to allow Lulu the option of assigning a composite feedback rating based on ratings entered by individual users. Lulu ratings are provided in order to allow the community of users to express itself and as a resource for new users. Lulu does not monitor or censor ratings, nor does Lulu investigate comments and ratings for their accuracy or reliability. Please note that you may be held legally responsible for damages suffered by other Lulu users or third parties as a result of these remarks if a court finds that these remarks are legally actionable or defamatory. Under federal law, Lulu is not legally responsible for any feedback or comments posted or made available on its site by any users or third parties, even if that information is defamatory or otherwise legally actionable. You agree _not_ to take any actions that undermine the integrity of the ratings system.

Posting of Information on the Site**

You will be allowed to post information, data and text to publicly accessible and limited-access areas (including but not limited to the private "Workspace" area) of the Site. Please keep in mind that you cannot post protected materials, including logos, seals or slogans from third parties, on any part of the Site unless they are provided by Lulu or you have sought and received express permission from the owner. By posting any content on the Site--including photos, text, logos, and the like--you certify that you are the owner, or have explicit permission to post that content, or that it resides in the public domain.

Lulu must retain certain rights in order to operate the site. None of these rights are intended to infringe on or exploit in any way your ownership of your own content. But so that We can administer the Site electronically--including archiving our file systems--we must request the following: when You post information, text, files, links, attachments, software or other materials ("Content") to publicly visible areas of the Site, You are granting, or warranting that the owner of such Content has expressly granted, a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, fully sub-licensable, non-exclusive right to use, reproduce, modify, transmit, distribute, perform, display and delete such Content (in whole or in part) and/or to incorporate such Content in other works in any form, media or technology now known or later developed. Again, this clause is in no way for the purpose of exploitation of your intellectual property rights. You remain free to retire the content or services you post to the Site at any time.

As always, please use good judgment when posting information, remarks or other Content regarding other users, service providers, Lulu or any other third party. You may be held legally responsible for damages suffered by other Users, Lulu or third parties as a result of legally actionable or defamatory comments, remarks or other information or Content which You post to Lulu. Under federal law (specifically, the Communications Decency Act of 1996), Lulu is not legally responsible for any remarks, information or other Content posted or made available on its Site by any User or third party, even if such information or Content is defamatory or otherwise legally actionable. Lulu is not responsible for and does not monitor or censor Content for accuracy or reliability. However, Lulu reserves the right to remove or restrict access to any information or Content posted or made available on its Site by its users or any third party if ordered to do so by a court or if Lulu considers such information or Content to be in violation of its Member Agreement or other posted rules or policies, including information or content We consider to violate our community standards--in other words content that is obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, illegal, or overly disparaging toward other community members. Lulu will remove content at its sole discretion for any reason it deems appropriate.

Contact Between Users Outside of Lulu

If you are a Service Provider, you agree _not_ to accept work from Lulu Users who contact you outside the Lulu Services Marketplace. You are likewise prohibited from making offers or advertising your services specifically to Lulu Users outside of the Services Marketplace. You agree that should Lulu become aware of a violation of this policy, your account may be disabled and you will be prohibited from participating in the Lulu Services Marketplace.

If you are a Purchaser of services, you agree _not_ to seek to contact the Services Providers listed in the Lulu Services Marketplace outside of the Marketplace itself for the purpose of purchasing services. You agree that should Lulu become aware of a violation of this policy, your account may be disabled and you may lose the ability to publish and sell content on Lulu.

Provide Accurate Information

You agree to provide true, accurate and complete information as prompted by the sign-up form, and to maintain and update such information. Whenever You post any information on Lulu, You agree to provide true, accurate and complete information. Lulu reserves the right to terminate Your account if we discover that the information You provide or post is not complete or accurate. Using pseudonyms for public purposes is acceptable as long as your Remit To address in your My Lulu profile is accurate and true.

Lulu may earn and retain interest on the balances in its accounts that accrue in between Buyers' purchases and our payment of Providers.

Lulu charges a small transaction fee ("Transaction Fee") on each service sold through Lulu. For providers, the Transaction Fee is a percentage of the total amount actually paid for services by Buyers. Providers will have the option during the process of offering their services to set the amount they wish to receive, and to view the Lulu fee and final cost of the service prior to approving it for offer. The fee paid by buyers for any given service is the price shown.

Lulu service providers and buyers are responsible for meeting payroll, tax and legal requirements for any legal entity.

Lulu reserves the right to change the method of calculating the transaction fee at any time. Any change to transaction fees will apply only to projects accepted after notification of the changed fee.

Distribution FAQ

What is an ISBN and do I need one?

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a controlled, 10- or 13-digit identification number allowing publishers, libraries, and book dealers to locate books. If you received an ISBN from Lulu the ISBN will include Lulu's prefix and Lulu will be listed as the publisher of record. If you assigned an ISBN that you own to the project, your publisher info will be listed. For more information on the history and purpose of ISBNs, see http://www.isbn.org.

An ISBN is not needed to publish on Lulu (Lulu ISBNs are available for free in the Lulu Publishing Wizard). An ISBN is needed to have a book distributed outside of Lulu and entered into the book industry commerce chain. Each version of a book — paperback, hardcover, second edition — must have a different ISBN. A unique ISBN distinguishes between different versions of a book, helping customers to be sure that they are ordering the book they want. For information on how to obtain an ISBN, see the How to get an ISBN for a book.

ISBNs are not for CDs, DVDs, calendars, or periodical publications (magazine, etc.). For more information, see Can I get an ISBN for my CD, DVD, calendar, or periodical publication (magazine, etc.)?

Does Lulu offer ISBNs?

Yes, you can get an ISBN from Lulu for free in the Lulu Publishing Wizard. You will need to purchase a Distribution package to have your ISBN submitted to Bowker's Books in Print and Nielsen Book Data (ISBN agencies).

How to get an ISBN for your Book

In order to offer your book on sites other than Lulu you will need an ISBN and a Distribution package. Lulu offers ISBNs in the Lulu Publishing Wizard. Distribution packages are available after publishing your book in your Project List. These distribution packages offer different ways to get your book out to the public. This tutorial will help you get your book ready for publishing on Lulu and make your book distribution ready. When publishing your book, click the blue Help button or the 'View instructions and info about this step' link at the top of each step for more information.

  1. Decide the distribution, size and binding type you would like based on the options in the distribution eligibility chart.
  2. Click on the 'Publish' Tab. Click the 'Self-Publish a...' button and select Paperback books or Hardcover books.
  3. On the 'Start a New Project' page enter a title and author name for your book. Select the 'Make it public and assign an ISBN to your title to sell your book in online bookstores like Amazon as well as the Lulu Marketplace' option. Click the 'Save & Continue' button.
  4. Select the size and binding options that you decided on in the first step. Greyed out options are not available based on previous choices and unavailability for Distribution. Click the 'Save & Continue' button to move on to the next step.
  5. If you want a Lulu ISBN, click on the 'Get a free ISBN from Lulu.com' option. If you have an ISBN you purchased elsewhere click on the 'Add an ISBN you already own' option and fill out your ISBN information. Click 'Save & Continue'.
  6. A page with information about what to do with your ISBN and a download-able barcode for one-piece covers will display. Click 'Save & Continue'.
  7. Create or edit your manuscript following the Mandatory Distribution Requirements. You can download templates for your manuscript here. Make sure to download a template for the size you chose in steps 1 and 4.
  8. Now you are going to upload the file from step 7. After uploading the file click 'Make Print-ready File'. If you upload a Word document, it will be converted into a PDF/print-ready file. If you upload a PDF we will do a basic check to make sure it is the correct size and number of pages.
  9. Click the 'Download & Review' button to see that your document was converted properly and that it looks the way it should. Click the 'Save & Continue' button to move on to the cover creator step.
  10. Follow the 'Requirements for all book covers' section of the Mandatory Distribution Requirements and the Book Covers FAQ. If you are making a "one-piece cover" you will need to put a barcode on your cover, see "Will Lulu add a barcode to my cover?".

Can I get an ISBN for my CD, DVD, calendar, or periodical publication (magazine, etc.)?

ISBNs are only for books and are not available for CDs, DVDs or calendars or periodical publications.

If you are publishing a recurring product (for example, a monthly literary journal), you need an ISSN (International Standard Serial Number). ISSNs are free! An ISSN is an eight-digit number that uniquely identifies your periodical. Unlike ISBNs, which contain country and publisher prefixes, the ISSN simply identifies the periodical (not the publisher from whom it is available).

An ISSN distinguishes a particular periodical from others with which it might be confused. The ISSN also helps library patrons, libraries, and others who handle large numbers of periodicals to find and identify titles in automated systems more quickly and easily. In the US, ISSNs are administered by the National Serials Data Program (NSDP) of the Library of Congress.

A separate ISSN is required for each medium; that is, if your periodical is available in both Download and Print formats, you will need a separate ISSN for each distribution format. After you get your ISSN, you should add it to your periodical. Unlike ISBNs, where Lulu adds the barcode to your back cover, ISSNs are your responsibility. Insert the ISSN in your source file before uploading and publishing.

Can I revise or change my book without losing my ISBN?

You can revise your book as long as it stays within the specifications for distribution. After your book is published and approved, you might find errors that you need to change. In many cases, you can change the book (re-publish it) without losing the ISBN. This depends on the type of changes you want to make and which service you purchased. In order to keep your ISBN

  • You cannot change the title.
  • You cannot change the binding type.
  • You cannot change the trim size.
  • You cannot change the interior color.

If the changes you are making would be considered a new edition of the title then you need to create a new project and have a new ISBN assigned to that book. If you make the following types of major changes, it is considered a new edition:

  • Adding, removing or moving text
  • Adding or removing chapters or an index
  • Changing the sequence of chapters
  • Dramatically changing your cover design

PLEASE NOTE - IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE YOUR BOOK'S INFORMATION CHANGES WITH BOOKSELLERS AND THE SUPPLY CHAIN. LULU CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR REVISED DATA NOT BEING ADOPTED OR CORRECTED WITHIN THE BOOK INDUSTRY.

  1. You are granting publishing rights to Lulu to act as a publisher on your behalf to retailers and wholesalers globally.
  2. Purchasing an ISBN through Lulu is non-refundable.
  3. Lulu will assign an ISBN to the title and Lulu.com will be listed as the publisher in all bibliographic feeds.
  4. Lulu will be the sole source of bibliographic data on your book. Lulu will feed data to the U.S. ISBN Agency as well as to Bowker's Books In Print ® and other industry databases. The data will identify Lulu.com as the publisher.
  5. You accept that Lulu.com is the publisher of record and that any creator revenue you earn through this ISBN meets the true & legal definition of the term 'royalty'.
  6. You accept that Lulu.com as the publisher is legally obligated to report any royalties that you earn through this ISBN to the United States IRS under the following conditions: For domestic US individuals or business entities, ALL royalties that you earn through this ISBN regardless of their ship-to address or final destination must be reported. For Non-Resident Alien individuals or business entities any royalties that you earn through this ISBN which are shipped to a US address will be considered US Sourced Income and must be reported.
  7. You agree to provide Lulu.com with your complete tax information to facilitate the tax reporting mentioned in point 5 of this agreement. You also agree that if you do not provide this completed tax documentation, the royalties that you earn through this ISBN will be subject to backup withholding.

    Specifically:
Domestic US individuals or entities must provide a completed, signed W-9 form with a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN for businesses). If a domestic US individual or entity has a valid W-9 form on file with Lulu then there will be no withholding tax deducted from the royalties that you earn through this ISBN. If a domestic US individual or entity does NOT have a valid W-9 form on file with Lulu then the royalties that you earn through this ISBN will be subject to the default backup withholding rate for domestic entities (currently 28%).

Non-Resident Alien individuals or entities must provide a completed, signed W-8BEN form with a valid Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN for businesses). If a Non-Resident Alien individual or entity has a valid W-8BEN form on file with Lulu then US Sourced royalties that you earn through this ISBN will be subject to the withholding tax rate specified in the taxation treaty between the US and the country you specify on line 9A of your W-8BEN form, if such a treaty exists. If a Non-Resident Alien individual or entity does NOT have a valid W-8BEN form on file with Lulu then the US Sourced royalties that you earn through this ISBN will be subject to the default backup withholding rate for Non-Resident Alien entities (currently 30%). Any US taxation treaty that specifically addresses, is documented, and directly conflicts with this structure will supersede these general rules.

Mandatory Requirements for Distribution

The industry requires that your book adhere to certain standards, and it is up to you to ensure your book meets these requirements. If your book is submitted before it meets these requirements, it will be rejected and your book distribution will be delayed while you work to bring your book into compliance.

  1. Requirements for all book covers
    1. If including the retail price on the cover, it must exactly match the retail price for the book. Lulu does not add the price to the book cover.
    2. Keep all important text and images at least 0.375" (.25" bleed area + .125" safety area) from all sides (including the spine) of the cover. This area may be trimmed off or obscured by the cover bend.
    3. Keep in mind that B&W 8.5 x 11" books will be printed at 8.25" x 11" through the retail channels, so you may need to increase the distance of any text or images from the edges to take this into account.
    4. Spine text must be at least .0625" away from all edges of the spine. Text that is too close to the edge of the spine will be reduced in size to fit. (This may result in very small text on the spine of the book.)
      1. Additional requirements for one-piece covers:
        1. Use these dimensions.
        2. Cover must have correct 13-digit ISBN/EAN.
        3. Bar codes must be provided in black and white.
        4. Bar codes should be 1.833" wide by 1" high.
        5. There cannot be spine text on books with less than 80 pages.
  2. Requirements for book interiors
    1. If providing a PDF it must be distilled using Adobe; if uploading a word processing document, Lulu will distill it using Adobe.)
    2. Embed all fonts (and all font family members used) when distilling the PDF.
    3. Book must have a Title page.
    4. Book must have a Copyright page with your correct 13-digit ISBN/EAN and a copyright notice. The Copyright page must come after the Title page.
    5. Final page of each book must be completely blank.
    6. Margins must be at least .5" on all sides. The left margin must be equal to the right margin, and the top margin must be equal to the bottom margin.
    7. A gutter may be added to the document in addition to the margins. (What does this mean?)
    8. Page numbering must be correct. No page numbers may be skipped. A page can go without a number, but it must be counted and consistent.
    9. All files should be submitted at high-resolution (between 300 dpi and 600dpi).
    10. If any page in the book will have color or images that extend to the edge of a page (full bleed), format the document according to the full bleed specifications.
    11. If the page count is not divisible by 4, the printer adds enough blank pages to the back of the book to make it so.
  3. Requirements for the Publishing Wizard
    1. Book Description, Author and Title must use a Latin Character set. We cannot accept Russian, Chinese, Japanese and other non-Latin characters.

How does the distribution process work?

Here are the steps from purchasing a distribution process to being available online:

  1. Purchase a Distribution package
  2. Upload your manuscript with the ISBN number in the copyright page and add a bar code to the back cover (for one-piece covers). The book manuscript must meet the Mandatory Distribution Requirements. (If you haven't already)
  3. Purchase a proof copy of this newest version of the book.
  4. After receiving and carefully reviewing the book, either:
    a. Approve the book on Lulu. Go to Step 6.
    b. Deny the book and make changes. Go to Step 5.
  5. Make revisions and upload this new manuscript. Go back to Step 3. See, How do I make changes before approving my book? to learn how to make changes.
  6. The book is uploaded to the distribution center within:
3-5 business days for ExtendedReach distribution
2 to 3 weeks for GlobalReach distribution.
  7. Printer reviews the book to ensure it is up to standards. This can take up to 2 weeks.
Once accepted for printing, it can take another 6 to 8 weeks before the book is available through online retailers.
If rejected for not meeting requirements, you will be notified via e-mail that the book must be revised. Go back to Step 2.
  8. The book becomes available for listing with online booksellers.
  9. Online booksellers like Amazon decide whether or not they would like to list the book. (In our experience, they almost always list it.
Once a month, online booksellers update their databases with new books. When they update (if the booksellers choose to list your book), you will see the book listed as "currently available." This can take 6-8 weeks.

If the book is revised at this point the process starts over at step 2 with all the work and time involved. See, "How do I make changes after approving my book?", for more information.

Common issues purchasing a Distribution Service

  • You do not have an ISBN for your book.
  • Your book is not eligible for GlobalReach or ExtendedReach Distribution.
  • You may only purchase one Distribution package at a time. Clean out your shopping cart and try again.
  • In order to purchase Distribution, your book must either be “Direct Access” or “Available to the Public”. Go to your My Projects page and revise the book's access

Last updated: 2009-11-18 09:47:59 | Back to top

Can I purchase a distribution service if I have entered my own ISBN?

The GlobalReach Distribution package is available for authors who brought their own ISBN.

Last updated: 2009-11-18 09:48:10 | Back to top

Why must I purchase a proof copy?

The proof copy is a last minute check for errors before the final published work is sent into the distribution system. Use this opportunity to read through the entire book again, looking for spelling, grammar, formatting, and page number errors.

If you make any changes to your book you must purchase a copy of this new revised version.

If you have to revise a book after having approved it for distribution it is possible that the book will show up as "unavailable" while it goes through this process again.

NOTE: This copy of your book will vary slightly from the books produced through distribution channels. Lulu has partnered with multiple print on demand (POD) vendors for printing books: some print books ordered through Lulu; others print books ordered through our distribution channels. This proof copy will be identical to all copies of your book purchased through Lulu. Unless you purchase your book through an online retailer you will not receive a copy from a wholesaler's printer. See "Paperback Printing Specifications", for more information about the differences between printers.

The Basics of Lulu's Amazon Marketplace Pilot

What books were used in this pilot program?
Lulu uploaded a selection of Publicly available / General Access books that have sold on the Lulu Marketplace.

Does the Amazon Marketplace Pilot cost anything?
The pilot program does not cost anything. Once Lulu has the service fully defined, an end date will be chosen for the pilot and Lulu will communicate in advance any changes to the service and you can decide whether to continue to list your title on Amazon's Marketplace or not.

What Amazon sites does Lulu upload the books to?
At this time Lulu is only uploading to the Amazon.com site, not the international Amazon sites.

What if I don't want my book on Amazon?
To opt out of the Amazon Marketplace Pilot send an email to amazon-opt-out@lulu.com with the Project ID of the book(s) you want to remove.

What if something is incorrect on my book's Amazon Marketplace listing?
On the Email Support Page select the "Help with ISBN/Distribution" option. Enter the email address you created your Lulu account with. Select Published by Lulu or Published by You for the Type of Distribution you need assistance with. In the Describe your problem field, supply the Project ID of the book and the correct information that should be on the Amazon Marketplace listing.

What if my book is already on Amazon.com?
The Amazon Marketplace pilot books will show in the New and Used section of the listing.

What if I change the price of my book?
Lulu is making periodic updates to ensure the correct price on Amazon Marketplace listings.

Last updated: 2009-11-18 09:48:03 | Back to top

When will my book show up on retail sites?

Your book will start to show up on retailers’ sites 6-8 weeks after you approve the title.

See, "How does the distribution process work?", for more information.

Last updated: 2009-11-18 09:48:14 | Back to top

Why isn't my book listed on Amazon?

It can take 6 to 8 weeks after you approve your book for it to hit an online bookshelf. This is because most booksellers only update their database once a month. The overall process and timing is explained in "How does the Distribution process work?". The decision to list a book is up to the individual retailer. In our experience, Amazon will almost always list a book for sale once they have access to it.

My book's information is incorrect at online retailers

If the information is accurate on Lulu, but not with retailers, revise the book and immediately approve it again. This will trigger the book's data to be re-sent. Changes can sometimes take 8 weeks.

If information is inaccurate with retailers and Lulu, revise the book on Lulu, fix the mistake, and then approve the book for distribution. This will trigger your book's data to be re-sent. Changes can sometimes take 8 weeks.

If the incorrect information with retailers is not data you provided Lulu, you will need to Contact Support with the appropriate information.

How do I upload my book cover to online retailers?

Once Lulu submits your book to our distributors it takes 6 to 8 weeks to appear on places like Amazon. The cover art can take a couple weeks longer to appear. If you do not want to wait for it to appear on Amazon, you can submit a customer image.

To upload your own cover art, click the "Share your own customer image" link on your book listing and follow Amazon's instructions.

Why do retailers say my book is out of stock or currently unavailable?

A book may appear on a bookseller's site as "Currently Unavailable" or "out of stock" while it is being processed. If it is unavailable for longer than 8 weeks after you have approved your book, please contact us here.

How do I remove my book from distribution?

To remove your book from the distribution channels, you must retire your book:

  1. Go to your "Project List".
  2. Click on the red X next to the book to attempt to delete it. A distribution book can't be deleted so the system will retire it.
  3. This will remove your book from our distribution channels.

Note: It will take another 6 to 8 weeks before your book's status changes on online retailers' sites. It is possible that your book will not be removed entirely from retailers' sites, but instead be marked "out of print." Please keep in mind that used books or copies that were sold through distribution before you canceled your title will still be available for sale.
