How do I get help at Lulu?

There is more information on how to find answers to your questions here: http://www.lulu.com/support/. The fastest way to get help is to search our help page for the answer you are looking for. Our help pages can be found here: http://www.lulu.com/help/.

If you can't find the answer you are looking for there, you can get help from other community members in the Lulu Support Forums. Odds are that someone else has reported the problem and it's been resolved and posted to the forums for all to see.

Report a Problem:
If your issue is of a sensitive nature, there are links in your order histroy, on your sales & royalty page for reporting such issues. Finally, there are links for reporting technical problems with the site: http://www.lulu.com/support/form_help_request.php?fSiteProblem=1 and abuse: http://www.lulu.com/support/form_help_request.php?fReportAbuse=1. All of these reports will be dealt with by support staff within 48 hours.

Is Lulu’s commission 20% or 25%?

Of the royalty you elect to pay yourself, Lulu adds 25%. This makes Lulu’s fee 20% of the total royalty which is added to the production cost.

Can I mail my project to Lulu?

No. If you can’t upload directly from your computer, you might burn your files to a CD or copy them onto a flash drive and then upload from a computer at a library or internet café. It’s recommended that you allow about an hour for the entire process even though the actual upload time will take much less.

Can I publish privately, without everyone having access?

Yes. During the upload process, one page will ask you to select a maturity level for your work. Select Direct Access. This will keep your project out of sight of anyone without the project’s private URL.

What’s a restricted review?

When you publish, you’ll have to option to allow unrestricted reviews (anyone and everyone can post a review) or restricted reviews (only your customers can post reviews). You also have the option to allow no reviews at all.

Can I put illustrations in my book?

Yes, indeed. Line art and grayscale should be at least 280 dpi in the final version (the inserted, correctly-sized version). There’s no extra cost for black and white or grayscale illustrations.

Books are printed with all black and white or all color content. To include even one color illustration, you’ll have to select color for all pages and pay the additional 13¢ printing cost for every page in the book.

How do I know if my book is selling?

Click on the My Lulu tab at the top of the screen, then on Sales & Royalties.

How do I order a proof copy?

When you upload your book, you’ll be invited to order a proof copy. The first book you order is considered your proof copy.

How long does it take to get into bookstore inventories?

Your book should be listed within two months, after you have purchased and approved your ISBN Plus.

Why can’t people find my project?

If your project is rated as Mature, anyone who seeks it out without registering, or who registers with a lower maturity rating, won’t be able to see it. One work-around is to upload the project as Direct Access and publicize the project’s URL instead of your Lulu storefront.

Is a page one side of a sheet of paper, or the entire sheet?

In bookbinding parlance, the sheet of paper is called a leaf. Each side of the leaf is a page.

How do I get paid my royalties?

Royalties can be paid by either check or PayPal account. If your accumulated royalties amount to $20 or more, payments are made quarterly. If you select PayPal as your payment choice, you’ll receive your royalties monthly, with a $5 minimum.

Unpaid royalties roll into the next payment period.

I'm a newbie and I want to express appreciation for all the information on this site. This question is probably already answered somewhere else, but I've managed to miss it, if so. Once I self-publish a book, can I later have it published the standard way, through a professional publishing company? Thanks in advance.

Yes, Debbi. You own the rights, and can stop selling at Lulu whenever you choose and publish it elsewhere.

Thanks for your helpful and prompt answer. I have a new question if you wouldn't mind helping me figure out the answer. I am uploading a 6x9 book. I set it up in Word in 6x9, sent it to Adobe online for conversion, then uploaded it to Lulu and the book is appearing on Lulu storefront (if that's what you call it?) as 8.5x11. How can I fix this? Thanks again.

Post this in the appropriate forum FORMATTING UPLOADING and you'll get a quicker answer.

My guess is because you didn't select 6X9 during publishing process or you didn't save changes in your PC settings

Every time I attempt to add the book to my cart the login screen keeps coming back up. I have already logged in so why does it come back up? And even after I retype my user ID and password it still just pops the login screen back up. What is the deal? Is there something wrong with the site???

Michael,
What browser are you using? If you are using IE, make sure it is updated to the most current relase. Also check the date and time on your computer, which is the most common reason for session expiration. If neither of these affects the log in issue, please let me know.

Regards,
Nick
