Another door; another room...
It is truly amazing how true the saying is, "the more things change, the more they stay the same". The world is constantly in a state of flux but within that flux there is the constant through and through, regardless of how much change there are some things that will forever remain.
Summer has come and gone, almost in an instant. The new school year is finally here and as students hurry to greet their friends (both new and old) they all pine for school to once again be gone. I'm reminded of Ray Bradbury's newest novel (well, not so new anymore), Farewell Summer. As the main characters, two characters; opposites in chronological age, fight and combat one another one cannot help but see the distinct similarities in both. The characters are one and the same, only seeing the world through a different lens, one from youth while the other from old-age. The same schemes, thoughts, interests and desires are expressed in each of their actions.
As stated earlier, the new school year is upon us and as a teacher I find myself in a new classroom, with a new door. Doors are funny things, aren't they? A door, a gate, even a window are such interesting things. Are we the same on one side of the door as the other? Does something change when we cross a threshold into a new room; an old room? Does our perspective change with our surroundings or are we always the same regardless of our environment?
