02-Jul-2015Leaving your past and possessions behind and traveling to exotic locales non-stop for years is something many of us will just dream about. Lucky for us John transports us too, giving us insight to a life-changing journey that will undoubtedly inspire wanderlust and soul searching in equal parts. You know that feeling you have after you've jumped off the cliff, sunk deep into the water and emerged for the best breath of air you've ever had? Go ahead and dive into this charming story of a most magical journey.
14-May-2015I'm giving John Langford's book five stars for a number of reasons. First off, it's fun. I enjoyed reading it. There's a lightheartedness to it that reminds me of the value of living life with a light touch. Second, I've always wanted to see the world. John's eye for detail and knack for turning a phrase made me feel like I was looking over his shoulder at so many different scenes... I could almost taste the kava and feel my own joints aching. I could almost see and hear the monkey's warning. Third, I'm taking away some precious reminders about life: Sometimes the only barrier between me and my goal is my own mindset. Sometimes the best answer is a smile. Sometimes the best thing to do is set and maintain a healthy boundary. Sometimes I need to take a deep breath before I speak. And sometimes a good haiku can capture volumes.
29-Apr-2015What a joy it was to read this little gem; short, fun, engaging, and humorous stories set in faraway places, populated by people that might look and sound different from me and yet through the author's warmth and honest engagement with them, are all very relateable. Interestingly for me, I read this at a time in my life where most of the stories had a subtle, parable-like quality to them, reminding me to be more available and present for people, to accept randomness and uncertainty, and to remember that a sense of wonder and humor is our best antidote against life's mishaps and missteps. This is a book that you will keep on your bookshelf for years to revisit again and again.
13-Apr-2015All good trips are, like love, about being carried out of yourself and being deposited in the midst of terror and wonder. (A quote from global author Pico Iyer). And so begins this honest, engaging, and delightful accounting of a three-year, one-man adventure that takes the reader along for a once-in-a-lifetime journey with no itinerary or ulterior motive beyond the moment to moment experience of new places and faces. Langford is a magnificent tour guide for the meek among us, as he shares, with an authentic voice, an assortment of joys – from sipping kava with tribesmen in Fiji to mingling with sheikhs in Qatar to motorcycling with a monk in Thailand. He takes us to New Zealand and Hong Kong and Laos...Kenya, Easter Island, Havana...with so many amazing stops along the way. It’s a dizzying trip full of generosity, unexpected beauty, and the kind of soul searching that only happens when you face the road before you alone. Pick up the book to have your travel bug tickled. Buy the... More > companion One Thousand Days to see this talented photographer’s images from his incredible sojourn. But don’t be surprised to find your perspective on the world-at-large changed by this forthright telling of stories from a traveler who is not afraid to dream the big dream, take the first step, and follow his wanderlust heart from village to village around the globe.< Less
05-Apr-2015This was a fun and engaging read and John Langford's humility, graciousness and sense of trust in the unknown is inspiring. Traveling the world with a tight budget and an open heart has resulted in a collection of humorous and touching accounts that provide insight into a world of people and places that many of us won't have the opportunity or, let's be honest, the mettle to experience first hand. Kudos!
