A quick introduction to playing Original D&D or Swords & Wizardry (the 0e retro-clone). This short document is absolutely worth a read. The author does a very good job of presenting his take on Old School vs how newer games tend to work, and the fact that he does it with examples really helps hammer the points home in a digestible format. There are some highlights that any GM can use, no matter what version of game they're running; if nothing else, it can help them see facets of what their players might be looking for, or struggling with. At times, it felt judgy to me, like it was making absolute statements rather than keeping in the context of "old-school" flavor, and it implied that "if you don't do it this way, you're doing it wrong." The rest of the time, it's more "if you don't do it this way, you're doing it different; your results may vary." Regardless, if you want a quick window into what all the fuss is about and what most people likely mean when they talk about "Old School," this will help.

Matt Finch gets this 100% right. He is inspiring without being preachy. This documents deserves its place in history as one of the foundational texts of the OSR. Personally, it re-ignited my imagination and shepherded me back to a game I've always loved. Read it!

Many people have asked what Old School means to gamers, if I have to sum it up i would merely say "Read this book." Mr Finch goes through the entire gamut for me with this short book, explaining what the differences are between Old School and many new school games and then proceeding to offer the reader excellent, and highly useful, tips and suggestions to help you get your game to where it once was. As a gamer who left gaming in the 90s and slowly made his way back, this product provides your with nearly a perfect strip map to get back to where many of us came from.

This is definitely a piece of the puzzle, albeit a small piece. Old school gaming is something which I forgot, something I had lost because when I first started playing and running Dungeons & Dragons there wasn't a name for what was going on... except fantasy roleplaying. Now, with the predictable degeneration of modernity, many of us have to be taught the old ways anew. If you're tired of the same old lackluster D&D(esque) sessions which don't come close to matching the nostalgic awesomeness of yesteryear, then read this PDF. Internalize it. And for Dread Cthulhu's sake... use it! ~~~ VS
