These two back-to-back runs account for but four of the 13 races of marathon distance or longer that she ran in 2002 (five marathons, four 50Ks [31 miles], four fifty-milers). This staggeringly ambitious racing schedule would exhaust 20-and 30-year-old elite runners. At forty years old, this truly IS amazing. But wait -- Helen s not forty. At firty it would be impossible. Sixty -- now we re getting ridiculous. Seventy -- we re getting warm. Amazingly, Helen was 79 years old for 12 of the 13 races, and 80 for the last. And you think you couldn t do what? The question is this: How can a septuagenarian do what fit, energetic young men and women in their twenties and thirties can t eve fathom tackling? The answer: She is in better shape than they are. She has greater stamina. Why? We ll explore the reasons later. For now let s just look at some more mind-boggling results of her dip in the fountain of youth. 1. One summer, looking for a little challenge, a 66-year-old Helen ran five 100-mile mountain trail races in a 16-week period. To give you a better idea of just how phenomenal and energy-demanding this adventure was, consider this: Marathon runners, running a mere 26.2 miles -- a relatively mere 26.2 miles -- and trying for the fastest possible time, typically take a month or two to fully recover. Compare that with Helen s running a 100-miler every two to three weeks during a 4-month span. Here s a description of the Western States 100-Mile Mountain Trail race (just one of Helen s five 100-miloers) to show you just how rugged a run these mountain-trail races are. And yet, it s really NOT about the running. In truth, it is a HOW TO manual for you to recapture the energy levels and vitality of your youth. But then, the fact THAT she was able to transform her non-athletic, 55-year-old self into a world champion runner is more important than the how BECAUSE & & it shows what the human body and mind are capable of -- regardless of age. Helen Klein s age-defying feats of endurance WILL challenge your self-limiting, self-destructive beliefs about aging. This will open the way for new, more empowering beliefs to be birthed. These new empowering beliefs WILL transform your life! Listen often for maximum benefit The Helen Klein Story (CD transcript) Narrated by Mary Mayhew It is safe to say that we do not fully understand what stamina is all about, or how to reacquire it, until we have heard Helen Klein s story. Keep in mind that we are taking a look at Helen s awesome feats of athletic endurance in order to recognize her remarkable vigor -- a fitness level we usually only associate with vibrant young people and champion athletes in their prime. Though Helen is a long-distance runner, our purpose is not to suggest that we should all go take up running. It is, rather, to show us that we CAN recapture youthful levels of energy and get in the best shape we have been in for years. It is also to show us HOW we can do it. On the third of February 2002, Helen ran the Las Vegas Marathon in 4 hours, 51 minutes and 16 seconds. Just six days later on the ninth, she endured 6 hours and 5 minutes running the Jed Smith 50K (31 miles) in California. In the fall of 2002, she upped the ante by completing thn States 100-Mile Mountain Trail ascends from the Squaw Valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first four- and one-half miles. From the pass & runners travel west, climbing another 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn. It is obvious that uphill climbs take their toll on the leg muscles, but did you realize that the descents greatly weaken the leg muscles as well, due to the stress put the legs as they act as brakes to keep one from picking up too much speed and tumbling down the mountain side? The Western States trial of tribulation starts in the icy, cold Sierras and traverses rivers and sauna-like, sun-baked canyons. According to fellow ultra-marathoner, Ray Piva, Forty percent of the starters don t finish [this race do to] the heat and the terrain. Helen not only completed this race, but four more of these strength-sapping, energy-depleting runs -- truly amazing! 2. As a mere youngster of 72, Helen successfully completed the exhausting Marathon des Sables and just two weeks later, with hardly time to catch her breath, took on an equally-grueling 370-mile Eco-Challenge Moroco s Marathon des Sables is a seven-day, 153-mile foot-race that takes competitors (maybe masochists is a better word) across sand dunes, over mountains, along dried-up river beds, and across the Sahara Desert. & among other obstacles, 13 consecutive miles of leg-fatiguing, shoe-swallowing sand dunes -- some as high as 200 feet. & Pick up your copy of The Helen Klein Story (CD) to find out how she did it, why she did it and most importantly, how it can help you to reclaim the energy and vigor of your youth. a month or two to fully recover.
