John Scott
The Appalachian Trail is a 2160 mile trail from Georgia to Maine. Those who hike from beginning to end are known as thru hikers and take 4-6 months to complete, typically starting from Springer Mountain, Georgia in spring of each year.
Many hikers start the Trail but only 12-15% complete. Apart from being a massive feat of stamina and determination, the Trail experience is also a fascinating way for a traveller to get to know the nation and its people.
John writes about his time on the Trail, the nation and its people having successfully completed a thru hike. John's journal explores his fascination with the US from the perspective of his youth in Scotland and then 6 months' hiking. He writes about matters both practical and philosophical which kept him engaged whilst hiking 15-20 miles every day through 3 seasons and 14 States.
