Alan Justiss
"Emotions run high when people speak of Alan Justiss. In his often inebriated
state, Alan has managed to insult or offend myriads of people, including me. He
has more enemies than I have acquaintances. But guess what, art is not always
pretty. You can't discredit the artist just because he isn't the picture of
social grace you want. Alan is the real deal. He sits among roaches, jars of
spit and towers of paper, in front of his old mechanical typewriter mixing words
in brilliant new combinations." -Troy
Lukkarila "He is a myth regenerating. Who does he think, he is? Does he even think, for
a moment, he's a genius? He is pecking at the Royal recording all the snatches
sifted through the beer muddled haze. The words blur even under new ribbons."
- Lynn M. Skapyak from "Alan
Justiss: About His In Her Style"

Rise in Love Do Not Fall
"In outsider poetry circles, Justiss is an icon, a legend, a misfit who’s able to string words together into phrases so wrenching that reading them feels like swallowing nails. “Rise In Love Do Not Fall” attempts to conquer love, and in dealing with a more sympathetic subject matter, the words go down a easier – like sandpaper rather than nails, perhaps.
In this collection, Justiss shares the stage with friend Heather Sielicki. Justiss and Sielicki alternate pages so their poems face and seem to respond to each other. The title comes from one of countless conversations the two had about the dynamics of love. “There’s nothing wrong with loving someone,” Justiss told Sielicki. “The problem comes with falling in love.” - Tricia Booker

Raw
“In a 1994 interview with Folio Weekly, Jacksonville’s Poet Laureate Alan Justiss made reference to the following, a quote by Sylvia Plath: “The moment we have expectations, we are guaranteed disappointment.” Twelve years, 15 residences, and thousands of pages of poetry later, Justiss puts a positive spin on the decidedly depressing notion, adding with a laugh, “Without any [expectations], I’m a pretty lucky man.”
In talking about his writing style, one that has generated interest for more that 40 years, Justiss maintains that he gives it little thought. “It just so happens that when I put a sheet of paper into my typewriter, I don’t know what I’m going to write. But, by the time I get to the end of the page I know it,” he explains. To highlight the organic nature of his method (or, perhaps, anti-method), “Raw” has been printed at 8 ½ by 11 and comprises electronic scans of Justiss’ typewritten pages." - Gwynedd Stuart
