Kevin Spears

As much singer/psalmist as he is instrumentalist, Kevin Spears is a gifted artist. His instrument of choice – the ancient, African kalimba, or "mbira." The kalimba was popularized by Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire in the 1970s. And today, Spears has become an innovative master of this instrument. Playing since the age of 11, his music defies description. You could say it is like a gentle rain that flows into the sound of a thunderous storm filled with a raging gentleness. Or you could refer to it as an exotic harp that evokes peace and tranquility. But at any moment he chooses, it can be profoundly deep and rhythmic. Whatever you call it, Spears' music spans cultures and leaves his audiences spellbound and asking the question, “How can so much music come from one man with one instrument?”
