Henry, the Happy Hydrant
"Henry, the Happy Hydrant" tells the story of a neglected neighborhood fire hydrant, named Henry. His yellow paint is chipped, his chain broken, and weeds are beginning to crowd his sidewalk home. One day, he is called upon to save the neighborhood by fueling the powerful hoses of the firefighters with his life-saving supply of water. After years of sitting idly, Henry comes through when he's needed most. The swell of admiration for the heroes of September 11 continues years later, and has renewed interest in emergency response teams. At an age-appropriate level, "Henry, the Happy Hydrant" offers a look at how these heroes serve us, sometimes even in our own neighborhoods. The story also teaches an early lesson in community service: the importance of caring for our community and the environment.
